...Mean Dog...
Author/illustrator of Whispers of the Goddess & The Quit Smoking Express. Graduate of the Long Ridge Writing Group & Institute for Writers
Mean dog
out on the chain
chained to the earth
Barking
Incessant
So cold
Hungry
Tireless
barking in anguish
it is just his way
to get through another day
His master watches television
Angered by his barking, whining
Hits him, hard, his canine skull cracked
wracked with misunderstanding
and so much pain
Why am I here
Does he think this?
Not unlike a small child
asking for shelter, food, and
God forbid
Love

Dogs always have better hearts than us. I believe that is why the lifespan of a dog is so short, because they continue to try to love their best no matter how many times they are beaten down or abused. My sons love our dog, he was rescued and he is quite a lunatic. He tears things, breaks windows, eats any and all garbage, but his heart is enormous. He was given back to the shelter several times. Should we have sent him back he would have been euthanized. It will be 5 years since we have had him come to our home. It's hard to call him an angel when he is stealing food off my son's plates, but we know what and who he is so - diligence is required to guard anything edible. We wouldn't trade him for any other dog.

I receive a lot of mail from places like ASPCA and the Humane Society. When I read other things, about animal abuse, and I hear dogs barking endlessly out in the cold it reminds me of some of the horror stories about both neglected animals as well as small children. This is the essence of poetry for me, to distill the painful truth through words that don't directly name names.
