Flight of Sacrifice
Head turned,
ear pointed to the ground,
She listens.
Her silent prey,
oblivious to the search
of this predator,
languishes in the ground.
A stab of precision
guided by millions
that came before her
brings them together.
She springs,
a graceful beast of flight
returning home.
Her waiting brood
waits impatiently.
Blind to her needs,
they demand her bounty.
She surrenders herself:
their rising glory
at her expense,
the day not far off
when they will take her place.
