Yellow Haze

Updated on April 30, 2016

Covered From Head To Toe

What is this?

When I woke

I first thought it was smoke

Alarmed and alert

I soon realized no one was hurt

It is something I never heard of

Before now it did not exsist

Everywhere I look everything is tinted yellow

Scientists have no explanation

Where it came from nobody knows

Our world as we know it will be changed forever

Every color is now distorted

Every vision a blur

Even the clearest of days are now a bit foggy

Once we all had a world filled with incredible sights

We took them all for granted

Finding out too late

We abused our privileges and lost our right

To live our life with perfect sight

Dear Michael. I sense you've described either a personal vision issue or actual air pollution, either of which could inspire the dramatic words of your poem. How right you are that one is hit 'between the eyes' when awakening to find that 'normalcy' we took for granted has been tested, overhauled or diminished.

It could be pollution. The poem is titled, “Covered From Head to Toe” which suggests it was all around, encompassing you. Your poem surely can paint a scene of frightening possibility which could go either way. I’ve never personally experienced the very air I’m in and breathing becoming thick, odd-collared and/or poisonous, but I could feel that in your words.

But also - there is a hint of one’s own vision being clouded and distorted, discolored. And if it's your own vision, I have much empathy, having been born with virtual blindness in my right eye. I was never 'hit with it' because it didn't 'happen' to me, it was just the way it always was. I may have thought it was how everyone else was! It was. It WAS real.

Finally, you’ve drawn the message in your poem that people allow distortions through choices that are made which gradually ‘pollute’ our world and our own vision. It's like a wake-up call. Brilliant!

How one sees it, for that person seeing it - IS how it is. What else, and what other way does a person have of observing what it is? We bring the externals into our awareness through our own individual 5 senses and interpret it with our own minds, as they've been shaped by our own experiences and our own state-of-being and how we've handled those influences. Even our losses and 'near-misses' have enriched our backlog of information for our present and future benefits.

It's not too far-out to think that the ways we wonder and picture how it could be may well determine how it WILL be, in fact.

Nellieanna That explains why a lot of science fiction years ago is reality today. I go with my thoughts. I was busy writing and I was tired and I closed my eyes to think and nodded off to sleep at the kitchen table.. When I woke up my eyes were a blurr and as it focused in all you could is my bright yellow table cloth in front of me. Then I went with it. The story just wrote itself. Thank you for reading.

Yes. Most progress and development is the result of someone's vision before it ever materialized. The great artist, Leonardo daVinci was born in 1452. He visualized submarines, flying machines, armored vehicles, an adding machine, solar energy and various other things and ideas in many different areas of knowledge not yet in existence, too numerous to mention - way back then.

Perhaps your vision is the precursor of something to come. It's wise to be very aware and cautious, if it is possible that visualizing has power to become reality.

Nellieanna Once and awhile an odd story slips out. It might have a negative vibe to it so I quickly try to refocus and examine why I feel this way. Once it is written I let it go. Maybe my body was not feeling up to par and carried my thoughts to my brain. Sometimes I met someone that r had a conversation that became disturbing. Soon I refocus and pull in more joy and refreshing thoughts as if I was a kid running under the water sprinkler getting all wet. A chilling cold but so much fun when you dry off in the hot sun. Most of my stories are a direct pipeline from my feelings to words. I like to think of it as my own Alaskian pipeline that stretches for miles and miles and it cost millions to make. In my mind I turn every story into something of value even if it only gets one reader. I reached out and got to tell my story to one person and maybe they understood what I was trying to say. Hopefully and wishfully thinking they got a laugh, smile and a simple I have been there and did that. Thank you so much. You really are the wind that raises my sail.

Interesting that you sometimes feel uneasy about thoughts or vibes that come to you but it's well that you have a way to redirect your thoughts into a more comfortable zone. Not knowing the nature of what it is which might cause that uneasiness for you, I'm not sure how to relate to it.

But at one time in my life when I was voraciously reading a lot of non-fiction things, like history, philosophy, etc., I started reading a book by a mystic who wrote about reincarnation and such and it made me so uneasy that I stopped reading it. It was a strong feeling that I should not be reading it. I doubt that the author or his writings would have that effect on me now. But it came to mind about that experience when you mentioned your sense of something being too disturbing.

Of course, having your optimism deflated and brought down might be what you're talking about, too. Various things could cause a sense of uneasiness enough to need to be reversed.

I've written more over my life which I didn't even offer for any readers than I have written since I've been sharing my writings only a handful of years. I am sure that the main value in writing one's feelings and thoughts is the benefit of doing it for one's own clarification as well as 'leaving tracks' of one's journey. So no matter how many readers find one's hubs or other writings, one's own benefit for growth and clearer self-understanding is being served. Nothing one writes is useless.

Nellieanna I am always practicing what words to use to bring out the closest experience I am feeling. Sometimes words go in a different direction than I expected. Thank you for reading and sharing.

You're right that words can lead to other directions. And one always has to bear in mind that it's not one-sided. We put out the words we believe best describe what we want to communicate, and at the same time, the person hearing or reading our words attaches meanings- interpretations to them from his/her own understanding & state-of being right then. Even if the person just has a toothache, it changes how the person receives the words and actions from someone else. All the person's life experiences form the way the person receives information and feelings from others.

Still, we owe it to ourselves and to the readers/hearers to be as clear and accurate as we can be - (unless we are aiming for being mysterious or canny.) Our efforts to do so are always worth it.

Nellieanna I love the freedom to give our opinion where in many places they still don't have that right. I think back in history how people gave their lives to speak against society so in time we could change and change for the better. When I write or type I feel like an actor that read his lines and then when he goes out on stage improvises and puts his own twist on the situation and it comes out so much better and sometimes flops. It was worth the risk. We are not machines and should not act like them. We are people with so many abilities and talents. The only way to discover them is by trying. That is our gift to the world. Sharing our own personality in a world of love. Thank you for reading and commenting. Now I am playing catch up. Have a fantastic day!!!!

Amen to freedom to express one's opinion! It is a privilege and should be a human right, but not aways is one, as you mention. It's almost a modern idea, that a person has rights. So many governments and powers of the past thought it would threaten their cruel stranglehold on the people if the people could object to or question it.

Perhaps when you feel like an actor reading your lines is due to a lingering sense that one is supposed to say what is 'politically correct' & 'polite',- but when you improvise or 'ad-lib', you've know that you've spoken your truest opinions. And, yes, sometimes that improves whatever it was and sometimes it can meet with disagreement, - but that's OK, too. Others are expressing their opinions about it. That's the way freedom has to work. As long as disagreement is civil & is not aggressive, we are all better for having the right to disagree among ourselves. When it is aggressive or overbearing, it's actually suggesting that our own opinions are not OK and that we should or must drop them and agree with the other persons(s).

For sure, we are not machines. Each individual has his/her own set of personal realities which he/she must always take into account when deciding a course of action. So, to understand others as much as possible, one must never forget that they are juggling all the factors in their lives and trying to keep it all in balance, too. Therefore one should not judge them, for it would certainly be to misjudge them. Of course, for one person to try to presume that his/her own view is THE best and that it should rule or dominate another person who should fall in line with it, - is truly domineering and aggressive, as well as judgmental, because it’s assuming that the other person’s view is wrong.

Fact is, there is not just one ‘best’ and ‘right’ way for everyone, and even if there were one, it would not be one person’s own opinion over the others!

Nellieanna I strongly believe live and let live. As long as another persons views don't do any physical or mental harm to me or other people. There are many situations that I have no control over and I try to avoid those people and situations. they make me feel uncomfortable and uneasy. Thank you for your gift of seeing what I am trying to express in my thoughts. I feel like I am looking at life through a microscope and I report what I see. Then you come by and adjust the microscope to a clearer view. Wow! We were looking at the same thing everyone else sees but I got a different take and you got an even better one. SHELLS

It's not a matter of better, Michael. Each is a personal perspective, based on our life experiences and present influences, including on-going relationships, our current health and states of mind. They shouldn't be identical, nor should one surpass another's. But we learn from each other and we widen our own views by looking through others' microscopes as much as possible to see other views of even the same things going on.

Thank you for seeing what I'm expressing. I see you're tired and am glad you're getting your rest.

I finally got to bed and slept soundly. I enjoy my sleep and have no trouble getting to sleep, but sometimes have trouble lying down! I often try too hard to extend the hours of being awake and productive. haha. Of course, it doesn't really work.

It's like daylight saving time. It really doesn't save any time. It just takes it from one part of the 24 hours and tacks it on somewhere else.

I love that metaphor! It's exactly what it is! We take what happens with an optimistic attitude, add our own inner richness, arrange it all as it is best & then we enjoy those happenings that come our way & become our way
