Why Writer's Block Doesn't Exist and How You Can Beat It
There's no such thing as writer's block.
You've seen it online. You've heard it in writing class. You may have even said it yourself. "I have writer's block." Well, I have a surprise for you. Brace yourself - writer's block doesn't exist. That's right. Writer's block is a fable. A lie. A cop out writers will tell themselves when they feel stuck in a certain passage or when they're feeling less inspired than usual. What I say is forget this phrase altogether. Don't use it ever again. It only serves to give you a reason to moan and complain instead of doing something to fix it.
Writer's block is a negative phrase and if you use it, you are only self-perpetuating the cycle of being "stuck" in your writing. If you find yourself feeling less inspired or frustrated with a certain piece of writing, try some of the suggestions I give below. Inspiration is Everywhere!
Feeling uninspired? Feeling like your creative juices just aren't flowing lately? You do NOT have writer's block! You just need to change your environment, your routine, your way of thinking. What demolishes, literally obliterates the supposed "writer's block"? Inspiration!
How do you get inspired? Where do you find inspiration for your writing? Think about what your passions are, what gives you that spark of imagination. If you're a creative writer, like me, you most likely just need to break out of your every day routine and do something new. Go somewhere you've never gone before. Get outside. It is crucial to the creative writer to get outside and let nature talk to you. I don't know about you, but my imagination starts to run wild when I see things like fields of wildflowers, hidden babbling brooks, and groves of gorgeous oak trees. So many stories can erupt from simple natural places like these.
Maybe you're uninspired by nature. That's fine. Again, the key is to break out of your daily mundane life. You're not going to be inspired by going to work, going home and sitting on your couch, doing the same darn thing day after day. Take some time in the morning to exercise, surf the web for similar writing styles, or read a new book. Sometimes our brains are overloaded and there isn't a lot of room left for our imaginations to run wild. Give your brain time and space for inspiration by taking time for yourself, even if it's just fifteen minutes every day.
You will find that there's no such thing as writer's block when you live on planet earth. There's inspiration everywhere. In the library. At your local park. Maybe even in your very own backyard!

Writing Takes Practice
When people say they have writer's block, I remind them that not everything you write is going to be perfect. Not everything you write will be exciting. Not everything you write will even make sense. That's okay. Writing is a passion, but it also takes practice. If you're sitting at your computer or in front of your notebook and feel stuck, write about how you're feeling! Write about the pen you're holding, the book you're writing in. Make up a story about the table or desk on which you're sitting. Sounds boring, but you might be surprised if your creative juices start flowing. If anything, you'll be practicing your writing skills.
I've heard so many people say writing is difficult. It is if you're not practicing. Just like anything else in life, it takes hard work and dedication to actually become skilled at something. Writing is no different. Yes, you may be inclined to the written word. Yes, you may be more imaginative than the next person. But that's not going to make you an amazing writer right off the bat. You have to put in the time and effort to perfect your skill. Write something every day. Even if it's just a paragraph in your journal or a four-line poem on your social media account. Just write something. Practice will only make writing easier for you in the long run.
When I hear someone has "writer's block", I think maybe their brain just needs a break. If you've used your brain daily for months writing a novel or some other piece, it is imperative to give your brain and imagination a healthy break. If you're feeling stuck, this is your body and mind telling you to lay off the writing and do something relaxing. This will help you regenerate mentally, physically, and emotionally. Most writers know that writing isn't just mental - it's physical, spiritual, and emotional. And when we feel like we can't write, many of us get into a funk. Don't feel down about it. Use this time to let your brain rest.
Just like working out your muscles, think of your brain like a muscle - once you're done exercising, let it rest. Read a fun, easy-going book. Go to the beach. Go for a walk around your neighborhood or local park. Play with your pets. Focus on something else that is relaxing other than writing. Everyone needs a break from their work, even if it is their passion. And above all, DON'T CALL A BREAK "WRITER'S BLOCK". You don't have writer's block, you just need to rest. End of story.
