What Is a Mother?

More than just a word

More than the one who gave birth

More than one who teaches right from wrong

To your heart she is a beautiful song

Her love is not to be taken for granted

Because some mothers can and do recant it

A motherly bond does not always remain strong

And some never had it all along

But the one who really cares

Leaves no doubt she is always there

To offer reassurance, friendship, and support

With open arms of ever-present comfort

No matter how much it breaks her own heart

To watch her beloved fall apart

You can break on her if that's what you need

Before you pick up all of the pieces

With her there's a special sense of safety

Because there is never judgemental scrutiny

Instead there is a patient not strings attached understanding

Coupled with gentle wisdom and advice that is free standing

So whether by birth or solely by choice

Your love gives someone reason to rejoice

You are a most precious gift from above

It's true, what makes a Mother is love

I had a good one for sure, once I was adopted. When I was a single parent I had an identity crisis....mother? father? somewhere in-between? Sigh! Parenting can be so confusing. LOL

Oh, yeah, I loved your poem. :)

      Dear Shan,

Your poem is a lovely tribute to mothers, and I do know of that precious love of a special mother, who I know I was blessed to have in this life. She was a one-of-a-kind beautiful person, inside and out.

You have embraced the heart of a mother in your poetry.

Thank you, from one mother to another beautiful mother, you!

So often someone else is more than a mother to us than our real mother. However, this should not make us love our real mother less. After all, mothers, too, are not perfect.

      A thought-provoking poem!

Hi, Martie! Most definitely love your mother even if someone else in your life is more of a mother to you. No one is perfect, you are so right about that. Life might be quite dull if we all were, I think. But I think that true unconditional love doesn't end because it's always a choice to love despite differences and mistakes, heartache, failure, all of those imperfections. Parents are usually the ones who do that our entire lives, even if it is imperfect at times. Life's a roller coaster and we never really know who will jump off our ride when it gets too tumultuous to handle it or when we make a mistake. But a parent comes back on board even if it is only by choice and not by birth.
