Is It Wrong for a Christian to Write Horror Stories?

Updated on June 7, 2017

GalaxyRat is fond of rats and writing. And dark poetry. She knows that people don't like all these things together... but who cares?

In My Personal Opinion...

I believe it is not wrong.

Why? My reason is: if God has given you the talent, why not use the talent? Sure, don't go and start writing about Satan and demonic stuff, but you can write horror. I don't feel it makes any difference. Just ask: What Would Jesus Do?

Hey, What WOULD Jesus Do? (And Other Questions)

Well, first off, Jesus is God, so He can do whatever He wants, frankly. But, if looking at it from the POV of Jesus, what can you gather?

For one, think what God would want you to do. Would He want you to write about gore and blood and all that? If it has good Christian morals, and maybe the characters becoming Christians in the end, maybe it could pass God's inspection.

Next off: How bad is the horror? Does it have immoral actions in it? If yes, do these lead to a better outcome? When you are writing, and you are writing about a good character, and your mind tells you to make her bad, do it! Go with the flow. You are always edit later. Put all your gruesome thoughts into the rough draft... just don't let your parents, kids, spouse, girlfriend, boyfriend, friends, etc, see it until you're done.

If you don't feel comfortable writing horror, then just stop.

Now let's get our third problem off the list: how much experience do you have with writing? If this is your first novel, start writing short stories or change the subject. Start with fanasty or realistic fiction, which are generally easier for the beginner.

What are Some Rules for Writing Horror?

Make it scary.

Play with the readers' emotions.

Describe the enemy (evil) or the main character if she is evil.

Tamara, yes. If it's to glorify God, then why not? And with all the evil in the world, you have to have it known. If people don't know, then they're in danger. Thanks for reading!

      Excellent!

I think it's okay to write about horror if it offers resulting conclusions that are helpful to others in some way. The truth is, we live in a world full of horror; I think it's best not to bury our heads in the sand, but rather, either lighten up its atmosphere a bit, or offer some solutions. It's like you said, it's not to glorify demons or evil, (No!!), but to add encouraging outcomes.

It would be nice if there was only pure, unadulterated love in this world, but unfortunately, there isn't. And, I believe it's important to touch upon the dark subjects enough to be able to shine the light of understanding to others' pain when they have to face darkness, so they do not have to face it alone.

Great article you have posted here!

Yep. It's not like you're gonna pick up a gun and do it. But, when you think about your story, that's a thought that's kinda immortal. God says to think good thoughts, which you aren't really doing.

Not wrong at all. It's creativity, ideas, and that's it.
