A week later in Vancouver
Bridget and the Pharaohs arrive in Vancouver, BC about 7:30 am PST. The temperature is a pleasant 19 degrees Celsius (66.2 F) and the sun is shining. You can tell that fall is in the air by the crisp morning breeze.
“Vancouver is so beautiful!” Bridget declares breathlessly as she steps off the plane at Vancouver International Airport. They are heading for the infocentre that will give them directions to the cruise ship terminal at Canada Place.
“You’ve been here before, Bridget.” Emily acknowledges as they walk briskly. She is happy that she has remembered to take a sweater along.
“Yes, I have. But it’s always been for business. I’ve never been here for pleasure. I’ve always had book promoting appointments.” Bridget admits and before she can get the words out a group of tourists swamp her.
“Hey, it’s Bridget Hathaway, the world-famous writer. The movie The Last Rites is awesome. That picture kept me on the edge of my seat. And the book does even more. I mean the part where …” one tourist commences before another interrupts her.
“Are you here, Ms. Hathaway, to promote your newest book, Reign of Terror.” Another tourist chimes in.
“Aw, I bet she’s here to work on another novel, and needs background info.” A third tourist sounds off.
“Wrong on all accounts.” Emily speaks up. “Ms. Hathaway is on vacation. Even famous writers and their publishers need time off.”
“That’s Emily Pharaoh, the best-selling publisher and co-owner of Pharaoh Publishing House. Man, I’d love to get her to read my book.” A fourth tourist whispers.
After signing a few autographs along with giving encouragements to a couple of prospective writers in the group; the trio of travelers is on their way for a little sight-seeing before retiring early.
Bridget has heard that Granville Island is Vancouver’s cultural hot spot. She expects to encounter a variety of sights and sounds. Jim’s friend has told him that activity centers at the southern end of False Creek, located under the Granville Street Bridge. It is also rumored that an assortment of artists can be found congregating in that area.
Bridget is too enthused to witness everything, bobbing her head back and forth and taking pictures with her digital camera.
Jim suggests that they traverse Capilano Suspension Bridge. The bridge spans 450 feet across and is 230 feet above the Capilano River. Emily is a little sheepish but game to make the trek but Bridget doesn’t want to have anything to do with it.
“You know how I feel about heights!” Bridget says nervously.
“You have no problem flying, do you?” Jim asks sarcastically.
“Oh, I would if the pilot told me I had to sit on the wing.” Bridget throws at him.
Emily laughs and tells Jim that he should go on across with the tour group they had seen earlier. Emily states she and Bridget will meet him at Stanley Park. Jim reluctantly agrees to this. However, he does yell an unprofessional ‘sissies’ and follows a tour guide.
Later that afternoon after shopping and dining on Robson Street …
“Well you two, I will see you bright and early in the morning.” Bridget says.
“You can count on it.” Jim replies.
Bridget closes her the door to her stateroom and collapses on the sofa.
"What a beautiful week this has turned out to be. Of course it is only Sunday, but the cruise begins in the morning" Bridget contemplates aloud and is excited beyond words.
Traveling with Emily to bookings all over the country and working on screenplays and novels are exciting ways to spend one’s life earning a living, however to get to visit all the places as just a vacationing tourist is even better.
A Princess Awaits ...
It is early Monday, September 11th as Bridget boards the Coral Princess with Emily and James Robert Pharaoh in tow. The weather is similar to a lovely day in autumn. This day is also the anniversary of the ultimatum she received from her former spouse. Brijèt hesitates for a moment as she recalls the day.
“No wife of mine is going to be tramping around the country, leaving me to cook, take care of myself and the kids. It’s either me and the kids or your career; you can’t have both of us. I am not buying into Mr. Mom and that is my final word!” Joe stated and pushes pass her heading for the front door. The thought of that day makes Bridget shake involuntarily.
“Are you all right, Brijèt. Not having second thoughts, are you?” Emily inquires cautiously.
“I was just remembering; that’s all.” Brijèt utters quietly.
“Well, let’s try to give you some new memories.” Jim responds.
