After putting on jeans and a sweater, Jack bolted out of the house. Carrying her purse and jacket with her left hand, she shakily pushed the unlock button with her right. She forcefully threw her belongings inside the car and revved up the engine. She then cautiously backed out of the driveway and sped off.

Seeking the neon blue lights, she noticed that it was 10:15pm.

I should probably take the express-way lane to the Hospital.

“Man, I hate these short days; fall never was my favorite season.”

Deeply sighing, she pressed the “CD” button on the dashboard and settled into her seat.

Instinctively, Jack began to sing these lyrics:

“There used to be a greying tower alone on the sea
You became the light on the dark side of me
Love remained a drug that's the high and not the pill
But did you know that when it snows
My eyes become large and the light that you shine can be seen?

Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey
Ooh, the more I get of you, the stranger it feels, yeah
Now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the grey”

“Lord, please allow Brian to pull through this! I can't lose him-not now.”

As the song played on, memories of yesterday began to claw its way back home.

Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey

8 Years Prior

Jackie Richardson pulled into the 1st parking stall in the 3rd row of the lot. Placing keys in purse, she grabbed her folder and leapt out of the car.

"Lord, if this job is for me, please bless me with it!" Jackie prayed silently as she marched excitedly toward the five-tiered building. Thinking of her recent accomplishment, she held her purple folder even tighter.

As Jackie approached the entrance, she spied well-dressed men and women going and coming. Attached to their owners were white-squared badges. Some were worn openly while others anxiously peeked out. She also noticed a plethora of stylish looking briefcases as their owners passed by.

I wouldn't mind wearing one of those with a leather briefcase some day.

Before entering, she was greeted by an employee, who held the door open for her. She managed to catch the person's first name from their badge.

Thanks Rebecca!

"Welcome to Stone & Steele Associates. May I help you?"

Jackie was immediately greeted by another, not two seconds later.

How might I address her? Jackie pondered while scoping out the woman's badge.

"Hello Joyce, my name is Jackie Richardson. I have an 8:30am interview with Cyria Bledsoe."

"Oh yes, I have you down on my list here. May I see a picture ID or Driver's License? I have to verify this information."

"Sure! I'm glad that S&S Associates is so thorough!" Jackie swiftly pulled her wallet out of her purse and handed Joyce her ID. After collecting the necessary data, Joyce returned the item.

"Please sign next to your name Ms. Richardson? Once you sign the guest list, I'll need you sign your guest badge as well; it's good for 8 hours."

After both signatures were executed, she proudly clamped the badge onto her black blazer.

Checking the clock, Joyce turned and made a phone call.
"Hello Cyria, I have Ms. Jackie Richardson here for her 8:30am interview. Given that it's only 8:10am, I wanted to see if you guys were ready yet."

Jackie casually leaned upon the front desk as she openly listened in. You guys? Who else will be there?

"Sure, no problem. I'll see you soon." Joyce offered as she ended the conversation.

"Ms. Richardson, Mrs. Bledsoe is ready for you. Would you follow me please?"

"I'm right behind you. By the way, who will be accompanying Mrs. Bledsoe?"

"One of our In-House Prosecutors, Mr. Brian Elly."

BEEP!...BEEP!...BEEP!

"What the...." Jack's words trailed off as she was thrown back into reality. Looking through her rear-view mirror, she saw a trail of six cars behind her. She pressed her foot on the gas pedal and speedily crossed the intersection. To her immediate right, were signs with a big "H" on them.

Good, the Hospital is coming up soon. I haven't been here since the incident...No, we're not gonna think about that right now! I'm here for Brian.

Searching the clock once more, Jack saw that it was 10:30pm. That is when she came upon the entrance for the Pinecone Valley Hospital and turned right.
She followed the signs that led her to the Emergency Unit. Once there, she began scanning the lot for an empty stall.

"If memory serves me right, the first row is always occupied so let's try the 2nd."

Sure enough, another car was pulling out of the 4th stall down. Jack patiently waited for the silver Chevy Malibu to leave. Once cleared, she drove her black Nissan Sentra perfectly within the lines.

While her heart picked up speed, so did her wobbly legs. As she entered the Emergency Unit, she saw a familiar face. For a brief moment, her mocha hued eyes connected with emerald ones.
