The Never Ending Tunnel - Chapter Four
Chapter 4 / 8
One week had passed and both Will and Jess made it part of their routine that after therapy and breakfast they would go on a small walk around the hospital's garden together. They always walked down the same route but they enjoyed being in each other's company. They both felt something for one another but neither of them was going to confess it.
As Jess walked back to her room, she found a small note on her pillow saying "Meet me at our usual spot at 8 tonight." She smiled at herself and felt intrigued as to what Will was up to. Will on the other hand was about to prepare the best night ever. He knew that nobody was allowed to leave their rooms after 8:30 and so they had to be smart about it and try and not get caught.
Every minute felt as though it was an hour. Neither of them was ever the type of person to break the rules and so they were both feeling quite anxious about the whole idea. They knew that if they got caught they would be in some serious trouble but they didn't really care as they enjoy being in each other's company and they would spend every minute possible with each other.
It was finally 8pm and Will slowly left his room without making a sound. As he approached their meeting spot he saw Jess hiding behind the wall trying her best not to get caught. He went from behind and put his hand in hers, scaring her to death.
"Follow me and don't make a sound." Will said holding Jess' hand. Jess had absolutely no idea what was going on but she followed Will nonetheless. She trusted him
They soon made their way to the roof. The sky was full of stars. They both laid on the ground staring at the beautiful endless sky. The moonlight was absolutely amazing. The whole scenery was perfect. Every once in a while they would see a shooting star passing by and they would make a wish. Will had planned the most amazing night for them.
They soon started talking and they couldn't stop laughing. This was one of those very rare moments where both Jess and Will would let loose and forget about the problems and enjoy the moment; something they would always do whenever they were in each other's company. Jess made him the happiest version he could ever be and nobody had ever had that much impact in his life; the same goes for Will. They both made each other happy.
Will noticed that Jess was quieter than usual and so he asked her what was wrong.
"Nothing." She replied trying to put on a fake smile.
"Hey I know you well enough to realise when something is wrong with you. You don't have to lie to me. Tell me what's wrong."
"I just miss my mother." Jess replies with a tear in her eyes. "Things are fucking horrible. I still can't get over the fact that my mother is gone even though a few years have passed. I miss her so much and I wish my father didn't have to get married again. I just want to be happy again and want things to go the way they were."
"I understand Jess, but listen; your mother is always with you. She's always looking out for you and just because your father met somebody else doesn't mean he doesn't love your mum or that he has forgotten all about her; it just means that he moved on as life goes on, no matter what the circumstance. He found someone who makes him happy and there's nothing wrong in that. I understand that you may not accept this as obviously she's your mother, but you have to find a way to be happy for your father."
Jess found comfort in his words. She felt as though she had shared a huge part of her life with him. She never felt this connected and close to a person before. For once in her life somebody listened to her and allowed her to cry. For once someone was interested in her, a feeling she had never felt before apart from her mother. This was the first time she had an intimate conversation with someone and talked about her problems. She was cherishing every minute she was spending with Will and she was glad that Will understood her situation. She was happy she found someone whom she can have these types of conversations with.
"So, do you want to tell me a bit about your mother then? She sounds like she was an amazing person." Will said smiling at Jess and bringing her in for a hug.
"Yes. She was the best!" Jess replied enthusiastically.
Jess mentioned every single memory she had of her mum and Will listened to her. She mentioned all those times her mother would buy her chocolate and sweets whenever she was ill and how she used to get in bed with her whilst they watched some cartoon. He listened to every detail she had mentioned and he fell in love with her. He loved how passionate Jess was talking and he saw how much her mum meant to her. He saw how much she loves her and misses her. From that moment on, Will knew that he wanted to make her happy. He wanted to make her feel happy again and give her a reason to start looking forward to the future.
Time passed by in a flash. Before they knew it, it was four o'clock in the morning. Jess laid her head on Will's chest. They were both going to end up in some serious trouble if somebody realised that they were on the roof at four in the morning. The sun was started to appear at the end of the horizon and it was beautiful. No words could describe the way they both felt. Neither of them got a minute's of sleep but it was totally worth it. They both had the best night of their lives and even though neither of them said the words, they both knew that they were in love with each other.
Just before they went down to their rooms, Jess pulled Will in, bringing him close to her. She stared into his eyes and kissed him. Will kissed her back, hugging her tightly. The thing Will had been imaging since the first time he saw her was happening. At that very moment, happiness filled Will. He felt this connection with her that he hadn't ever felt with anybody else. He felt as though he had found the missing piece in his life. He had found the girl of his dreams and he was kissing her.
As they started making their way down the stairs and back to the room they made sure that nobody saw them as that would mean serious trouble for both of them. Now that they both knew that they liked each other everything had changed.
Now they didn't have to hide it from each other but they did have to hide it from everybody else. Dating was strictly banned whilst in the hospital. One thing was sure though, and that was that Will had waited for this moment since the first time he'd seen Jess and he wasn't going to let her go, no matter what. From now on, Will wanted to make Jess happy and he wanted to show her how much she means to him.
"This was the best night of my life. Thank you so much for listening to me. I am so grateful to have met you." Jess says just before they both parted into their separate rooms.
