Ms. Williamson has been captivating the hearts of readers for decades. Her heroes are strong and daring while the antagonists, diabolical!

How Do We Handle This ...

“Did you just say that they become a werewolf?” Ben pushes back into his chair, pulls open a drawer and reaches for a small flask. It contains Cuba Libre, a cocktail composed of cola, lime juice, and rum.

“That’s exactly what I said now pass that over here.” Nelson takes a swig from the flask as well. He gives it back to Ben.

“This is definitely out of my league.” Ben confesses.

“Mine as well. I think we are going to have to get a third opinion.” Nelson suggests.

“And who might that be?” Ben asks.

“None other than our dear friend, Dr. Hilton Frye!” Nelson announces.

“Hilton—what does he know about this Lycanthropy Disease?” Ben queries.

“Not nearly as much as his wife, Audrey does. She teaches Mythology at the university. She also has a great interest in the occult.” Nelson says.

“Yes, Audrey! I forgot about her. I never thought I would be dealing with anything as farfetched as werewolves.” Ben shakes his head in incredulity.

“I know. Let’s get Hilton in here and tell him what we know.” Nelson suggests enthusiastically.

“Right.” Ben picks up the receiver and pushes down on a button.

“Yes, may I help you Dr. Riley?” Shirley answers. She’d since return to her official duties as receptionist.

“Remind me to make you my new admin since Janice will be helping me more in the medical field.” Ben begins.

“Oh wow ... I mean thanks!” Shirley is overjoyed at the promotional prospects.

“Second, get ahold of Dr. Frye. Tell him that Dr. Cooper and I would like to have a conference with him in my office asap.” Ben rejoinders.

“I’ll get right on it, Dr. Riley.” Shirley tries to maintain her professionalism but is finding it harder to channel her excitement.

“And Shirley—” Ben replies.

“Yes, Dr. Riley?” Shirley answers.

“It’s okay to be happy about the promotion. Put an ad out for your position and congratulation.” Ben chuckles.

“Thanks, Ben—Dr. Riley.” Both end the conversation.

“Hmm, giving my cousin a promotion. Is there anything I should know?” Nelson is kidding him.

“Nothing that you don’t already know. Janice is my nurse and technical assistant. Shirley will be by personal assistant.” Ben states.

“That’s what it’s call now.” Nelson chuckles while Ben raises an eyebrow.

“Let’s just concentrate with the problem at hand, shall we.” Ben reprimands his friend.

“But of course.” Nelson replies smiling.

Fifteen minutes later Hilton taps on the door and enters.

“What’s up?”

Both Ben and Nelson inform him on what they have discovered. Hilton has found a chair next to Nelson and is quietly listening. When the men are finished they look intently at him. He puts his hand to his chin, softly stroking his beard. Then he answers.

“This is a very touchy subject.”

“How so?” Ben inquires.

“From what Audrey tells me, there has been a lot of activity in the Northern Lands regarding atmospheric phenomena.” Hilton reports.

“Why would that be a concern?” Nelson queries.

“Only the fact that there will be a Blue Moon within a few days.” Hilton responds.

“A Blue Moon?” Ben looks from Hilton to Nelson in complete confusion.

“You need to get out more.” Hilton begins. “You are so engulfed in our medical profession that you don’t have a handle on other events.”

There is a legend regarding when it is not only a full but a blue moon as well!
There is a legend regarding when it is not only a full but a blue moon as well!

“Do you know anything about this Blue Moon, Nelson?” Ben turns to Nelson.

“Yeah. I went over to Hilton’s house once with my sister Janice.” Nelson notices the look Ben gives him. “Look, we were both between dates and the Fryes had invited us over for Bridge. Afterwards, we got to talking and she happen to bring up the subject of the Blue Moon.”

“What about it, this Blue Moon?” Ben prods.

“It’s a time of unusual occurrences. We will have to take exceptional security measures regarding Jeremy.” Hilton tells him.

“Are you telling me that he may transform into this creature.” Ben laughs until he sees the looks on Nelson’s and Hilton’s faces. “Come on.”

“Have dinner with Audrey and me tonight. Invite your dates or on second thought just bring Shirley. Nelson, bring Janice. This is no time to introduce any other people to this lecture. I know Audrey will have slides or maybe even a video regarding the subject. She’s an excellent teacher.” Hilton brags.

“That will be perfect. Since Janice is going to be my Medical Liaison and Shirley my Administrative Assistant—it will be just the thing having them involved.” Ben proclaims.

The men decide to inform the ladies regarding the festivities for the evening. Before leaving for the day, Shirley decides to look in on Jeremy. He is in a docile mood at the present. A part of her heart goes out to him and a part is angry because of his subterfuge.

The Containment Chamber has been modified to include a better bed, a mirrored dresser and a portable flatscreen TV hangs from the ceiling. Jeremy speaks in a husky voice.

“It’s good to see you again Shirley. I’m sorry about everything.” Jeremy says mildly, coming very close to the bars.

“Hello Jeremy. I had them make those adjustments to your chamber. It makes it more humane.” Shirley explains.

“Honey, let me explain.” Jeremy says.

“I tried so hard to trust you, Jeremy. I felt that we were making great strides toward a life together. But you did things behind my back. You conspired with Ian to develop your own version of the serum. You even got poor Debra involved in your schemes. You could have got her fired.” Shirley scolds.

“I did it for us, honey. I wanted things to be wonderful. More money than we could imagine. I wanted to prove to your cousin and Dr. Riley that I could make a great contribution.” Jeremy defends.

“Please, Jeremy. Enough with the con. If you were really interested in our happiness you would have been straight with me from the beginning. You just manipulated me like every other girl in your life.” Shirley watches him with a sadness in her eyes.

Jeremy paces back and forth in his chamber. He utters a low growl and makes a final attempt to reason with Shirley. When she refuses to submit to his charms, he becomes hostile and starts shouting obscenities. The security men make their appear and advise Shirley to leave. As she does, there is more harsh words and the men have to dart him with a strong tranquilizer.

The otherwise strong willed Shirley breaks down in front of the closed door. Ben is looking for her and finds her there. She rushes to him and he envelopes her in his strong arms.

“Things haven’t worked for you very well in the Romance Department, have they honey?” Ben tries to soothe her.

“Why does everyone have to call me honey—first you, then Jeremy?” Shirley is still crying.

“Because you are such as sweet girl. In spite of your big girl act—you know I know the real you.” Ben coos.

“Oh Ben—why couldn’t we have worked things out?” Shirley’s sobbing is beginning to subside.

“Because you want more out of our relationship than I can give you. I’m not a 9 to 5 guy. When I become engrossed in a project, I could be away for days. As my wife, it would not be right to take you on scientific excursions. However, as my Administrative Assistant, we can work together in harmony. You and Janice will be detrimental to my success. My feelings haven’t changed regarding you, Shirl. My profession just takes top priority.” Ben explains.

“I know. You’ve made that plain often enough. I saw Janice and she explained to me about our meeting at the Fryes tonight.” Shirley smoothly changes the subject.

“Good. I need more clarification about the subject of Lycanthropy. I’ll pick you up in a couple of hours, ok hon—Shirley?” Ben corrects himself.

“I’ll see you then. Bye.” Shirley pulls away and heads toward the parking lot. Ben watches as she moves down the hall. Remembering—

The hardest battle to face is with yourself. Shirley is torn between her desires and common sense. Jeremy is a rebound from Dr. Riley. No woman wants to fail twice!

Oh dear, I see a terrible tension here in Shirley. She has broken up with Jeremy, knowing how selfish and irresponsible and dangerous he is but there still seems to be an attraction there. Danger can beckon even when you think you have put it behind you!

Shirley has come to terms with both men in her life. She realizes that Jeremy is a brilliant and selfish man who can never change his priorities. She also realizes that Ben is a brilliant and dedicated man who doesn't want to change his priorities!
