The Return of an Old Friend ...

Benito sits back in his chair after contemplating his brief conversation with Elke. He stares out of the window as if captivated by the commotion outside. It is rare that he indulges himself in observing the playful activities of others. However, his brother’s children seem to be fascinating at the moment.

Then, as if awaken from a trance, he stares at his vibrating cellphone. The caller ID betrays the intrusion of an old associate. He answers.

“I don’t know why I didn’t recognize your pattern.”

“Well, it has been a long time, hasn’t it Beni?” The voice returns.

“Too long—I suppose it was Marko who engaged your particular expertise?” Benito probes.

“It is one of the functions of S.T.O.P.” The voice responds.

“Since when did the organization take on personal vendetta’s?” Benito’s curiosity is at its peak.

“When it involves the assassination of a top cabinet member, the infiltration of the Pentagon, and a chance that it could very well happen again unless all of the cobwebs have been removed.” The voice asserts.

“Mrs. Sterling hired me to—” The voice interrupts Benito sternly.

“Elena Sterling never should have contacted any gun-for-hire organization. She should have trusted that higher powers would be responsible for cleaning the debris.”

“I see. So what do you want me to do?” Benito is perturbed. He hates it when his well-made plans are disrupted.

“Calm down, Beni. Your associates will be well-paid and I would rather have you as a consultant—” This time it is Benito who interrupts.

“No, you mean it is Marko who would rather have me as a consultant.” Benito rejoinders disgustingly.

“And I concur!” This last statement even surprises Benito. “S.T.O.P. has far more resources at our disposal. It would be great to enlist you and your operatives to our team.”

“You flatter me.” Benito asserts.

“No, I speak the truth. Alone, you and your marauders could face criminal charges even though you are eliminating the scum of the political arena. But with us as your cover, you are not only above the law—you are the law!” The voice concludes.

“Your point is extremely valid. I will take it up under advisement when next I meet with my associates. And by the way, we are not marauders.” Benito defends.

“Okay, sorry. Now will you please let my group handle this?” The voice pleas.

“You will ensure that the rest of my associates are fully paid plus?” Benito queries.

“As has been previously done. You have my word as a representative of both S.T.O.P. and Baron Balogh.” The voice seems to be smiling by the rich tone of his speech.

“That’s good enough for me.” Benito responds.

“Please delete this conversation and thanks for the secrecy!” The voice replies and both men end the conversation.

“Figlio di puttana!” Benito swears.

Johannesburg, South Africa!

Johannesburg, South Africa!

Out of Sight ...

Jonas Fischer, Luis Wagner, and Finn Schulz board a commercial jet heading for Johannesburg. It is night when the trio finally reach their destination. Their disguise as three European matrons have been like a salvation. With cleverly arranged passports and other identifying information falsified—no one is the wiser.

There is no problem getting through customs and soon the men are in a taxi heading for their hotel suites. It doesn’t take long before they reach the Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff. Each individual quietly exits the vehicle and until they are safely within the confines of their suites, no one dare says a word. After carefully inspecting their temporary abode, they decide to meet downstairs.

“So far, so good.” Jonas is the first to comment.

“Yes, Baron Schröder makes good his promise that if I ever needed his assistance, he would oblige.” Luis retorts, feeling very good about how things have progressed.

“Now all we have to do is rest here for the night. Tomorrow, we will board the private charter and will be home free!” An excited Finn whispers.

“Let’s not blow this. Return to your rooms and stay there until morning. Don’t talk to anyone and don’t accept any telephone calls. Not even from family members. No one is beyond suspicion. Thank goodness there is no wife or children involved.” Luis explains and all three return to their suites.

The following morning, the three conspirators make their way to a private strip where they are silently placed onto a beautiful Cessna Citation Mustang. For a smaller passenger jet, it is superb! Within moments, the men are on their way to the remote island.

Meanwhile ...

The representatives of the S.T.O.P. are at a lost as to where Jonas Fischer, Luis Wagner, and Finn Schulz have vanished. No one in their perspective empires seem to know the whereabouts of these men. The news media is in a frenzy as to what has happened and is presuming that they have also met with an untimely end. Benito listens intently as the news blast across his living room stereo system and locates him in his spacious kitchen.

“There is no news regarding billionaires Jonas Fischer, Luis Wagner, and Finn Schulz. Their offices are empty and even their closest associates have no idea as to what has happened. If it is foul play, then it is thoroughly executed. Nothing remains!”

Benito rushes into the living room, leaving his breakfast on the counter, and stares at the equipment. “Nothing remains?”

Just then, his cell phone vibrates loudly. It is Elke.

“What’s with those fanatics at S.T.O.P.? Did they blow the three men up?”

“No, I don’t think this is their work. I think we truly underestimated the resilience of those men. If you saw a pattern in the deaths of people you were close with, what would you do?” Benito asks Elke.

“I would get the heck out of Dodge!” This is Elke’s quick response. Then she nods her head. “I see.”

“Right. They went into hiding. The mistake that was made was not to take them all out simultaneously. Or at least to allow more time or interval in between the executions. These men didn’t become billionaires being stupid. And, they are all crafty.”

“What do we do now?” Elke wonders.

“Nothing!” Benito smiles into the phone. “Let’s just sit back and see what the professionals are going to do. They are in the driver’s seat.”
