One Step Beyond Madness: Finale
Destroying the Menace ...
The stage is now set for the confrontation. Dr. Weinberger has gathered her staff and along with Dr. Holloway and Dr. Bob Hawkes, the ingredients for the Enhanced ZL-90 are gathered. They have also decided to use the radioactive binders F-altanserin and F-setoperone in order to accelerate the ZL-90 enzyme. This will triple the response time as they will adhere themselves to the 5-HT2A receptor.
“Be very careful with the measuring of that isotope. Too much will put that beast into a cataclysmic state and too little will not be effective at all.” Dr. Holloway warns.
“I am very much aware of that fact, Dr. Holloway.” Rachel reminds him feeling very much like a student performing her first experiment.
“I am just stating the severity of the consequences involved that’s all.” Dr. Holloway states, feeling much like a reprimanded professor.
“If you two will excuse me, I’m going where people speak in less technical terms.” General Weinberger informs Rachel. He is later joined by Dr. Bob Hawkes.
“What do you make of all this, Bob?” Kit Weinberger asks him.
“Well Kit, it’s pretty deep in there. I understand what they are doing but right now I’m more concerned with the mental stability of Dr. Holloway.” Bob replies.
“In what way?” Kit probes further.
“I don’t see any problems with Dr. Holloway administering this Enhanced ZL-90 to the original beast but this new creation of his—” Bob pauses.
“I get your drift. It will probably be a good ideal to keep an eye or two on the good doctor. He may be devising some sort of plan to keep that second one alive.” Kit considers this fact carefully.
“I think I’m going to have a few of my top associates keep a close observation of Dr. Holloway’s movements. His cooperation seems a little bit too agreeable.” Bob concludes.
After their conversation is over, Dr. Bob Hawkes carefully chooses a small group of agents to closely watch Dr. Holloway for signs of deception. Unfortunately, Dr. Holloway is also aware of this ploy. It will not be likely that he will allow himself to slip up when it comes to dealing with the watchful eyes of the Military Intelligence.
The bait this time will be Armed Forces Adjutant Claire Westbrook. Neither Rachel's brother Kit Weinberger nor her fiancée Hunter McDonald will allow her to attract the beast a second time.
“I can’t understand why I can’t be the one to drive the snowmobile again. I maneuvered it the last time without any problems.” Rachel protests.
“Yeah, and had I not been near the entrance when that beast was about to have you as a late-night snack—” Hunter allows his voice to trail off.
“I know, and I am forever grateful to you, darling.” Rachel coos.
“Besides, you are going to be the one to administer the Enhanced ZL-90. I don’t trust Dr. Holloway. In fact, nobody does.” Hunter adds.
“Hunter’s right Rachel. Claire is a former Olympic cross-country snowboarder. She’s driven snowmobiles since she was ten years old, and she’s an excellent navigator.” Kit justifies.
“Okay, I’ll give her that but what does she know about the Devil’s Gap? That place has some curves that you just would not believe.” Rachel identifies. “Will she be able to make last minute alternative course adjustments?”
“I will be mirroring her moves, Rachel. If things get a little touchy then I can intercede with my trusty tranquilizer gun. Since it has been decided that the dosage needs to be administered in the research lab—no one will be without their guns.” Hunter reassures Rachel.
“So you are not going to be the only one following this Claire Westbrook then?” Rachel questions
“Heck no, there are going to be quite a few of us. According to Dr. Holloway, it’s going to take a truckload of tranquilizers to slow this baby down.” Kit retorts.
At that moment, Claire Westbrook enters the room.
“I’m laden down in Joy Perfume, ugh ... let’s get this show on the road.” Securing her helmet down with an extra strap, Claire struts outside and mounts her snowmobile.
“Be careful, huh Claire.” Kit says in a too familiar voice which raises the eyebrows of both his sister and Hunter.
“Don’t worry Kit—the cargo is safe with me!” Hunter says giving Kit a knowing wink.
Claire Westbrook is a very good snowmobile driver taking the curves and bends in the road with ease. It doesn’t take long before she nears the Devil’s Gaps and hears a chilling sound.
The race is on as Claire pushes the snowmobile to maximum speed barely staying out of reach of the creature. It almost scratches her leg at one point, but she manages to quickly maneuver out of its reach.
Claire almost faces devastation when a rockslides forces her to make an unexpected sharp turn. She loses control of the snowmobile and both tumble near the edge of a ravine. Had it not been for the quick response of Hunter and the others, she would have been severely hurt if not killed. Nevertheless, once again the beast has been subdued. Under extremely heavy sedation, it is brought back to the research center where the lethal dose can be administered.
Tying Up Loose Ends ...
Dr. Weinberger, Dr. Hawkes and Dr. Holloway are all present for the final administration of the Enhanced ZL-90. First, Dr. Weinberger takes a 10 ml syringe and fills it with Enhanced ZL-90. There is more than enough of the enzyme to do the job and to do it effectively. After applied, they wait. There are no screams, no mourns or shudders as if in terrible pain. Just a systematic slowing down of heart rate, blood pressure and other vital signs. After about 15 minutes—the beast is destroyed.
The files regarding Experiment 697 are removed from Dr. Holloway's care and safely put into the hands of Dr. Weinberger. Dr. Theodore Simmons, Acting Chief Liaison, is there to receive them from her.
“These records will be disposed of in the Cantor Repository 150 miles east of Tannersville. You and your team have done an excellent job, Dr. Weinberger.” Dr. Simmons firmly shakes Rachel’s hand. “By the way, where is Dr. Holloway?”
“I think he went to use the restroom.” An aid to Dr. Simmons responds.
“Fine, fine. The Tannersville Research Facilities are being closed permanently and the staff will be temporarily housed on the tenth floor of the Tannersville Center for the Physical Sciences. Although I won’t formally place charges against Dr. Holloway, he has been barred from receiving any type of appropriations for biochemical research.”
Dr. Holloway is on the line with someone who has a very heavy German accent.
“Sind Sie sicher, Dr. Holloway, dass Sie alles haben, was wir brauchen?” (Are you sure Dr. Holloway that you have everything we need?)
“Ja, treffen Sie mich einfach am Flughafen!” (Yes, just meet me at the airport!)
Later that same day, Dr. Rachel Weinberger along with Dr. Bob Hawkes prepare to administer the same lethal dose of the Enhanced ZL-90 to the 2nd creature temporarily housed at the Thomasville Conservatoire. However, when they arrive, there is no one at the facility—no sign of Dr. Holloway or of the creature!
The End or Is It?
Reaching Beyond the Madness
- Reaching Beyond the Madness
Dr. Holloway has fled to Switzerland to rendezous with Colonel Schneider. This can't be a good move for Experiment ZL-90A. Will the Germans use this modified biological weapon against the United States?
