Coping with a sick relative, or the death of a loved one is an extremely sad experience in life. Especially if you are the one in charge of making the funeral arrangements or scheduling the doctor's appointments. It's overwhelming, not only on the body but more so on the mind.
You will be experiencing a whole range of emotions, sadness, frustration, confusion and, possibly anger. For some, you may feel so helpless that the thoughts of staging a recovery are nothing more than wishful thinking.
But at some point, you will have to decide whether to continue with grief and sorrow or let go and allow God to take control.
How you go about dealing with hard times depends on your willingness to take active steps to inspire comfort and strength amidst pain and grief.
Trusting in God is the first and most important step to consider before going any further. The road ahead is long and dark for you to walk alone—you need strength; you need encouragement, and you need comfort.
Thankfully, the Bible represents God's inspired words—it's an infinite source of comfort, strength, and encouragement.
With that said, here are seven Bible verses about comfort to empower with strength in stressful times.
Bible Verses About Comfort
1. Psalm 46:1
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
Trials and troubles will come, whether you like it or not, the bible says in Psalm 34:19 "Many are the affliction of the righteous, but the Lord delivers them out of them all." But the verse also says "but the Lord delivers them out of them."
Psalm 46:1 "God is our refuge and strength," you may not be able to control all that goes on in your life, but, one thing is certain; God is your refuge and strength, you can hide in Him while the storms pass over. ...an ever-present help in trouble, God has your best interest at heart; while you hide in Him, He will help you. Don't worry, don't fret; hold your peace and the Lord will fight for you. You may not be seeing any light in the tunnel, but God is with you, and he is working things out on your behalf. ".
God is your hiding place, and amidst tragedy, He is with you and has promised comfort, peace, love, and strength in hard times.
2. Psalm 23:4
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me."
Valleys are low, dark and lonely moments in life. Life's valleys are some of the most if not most difficult moments to deal with. They usually come when we are vulnerable. When our finances have dried up, in our times of mourning, or in times of great misfortunes.
But this text encourages us to be fearless. Why? Because God knows how to deliver His children from the lowest and darkest of valleys.
God is omnipresent - He is with us every step of the way. God is omniscient - He knows exactly what we are going through.
There's no valley so dark that God cannot find us, neither is there any heart so broken and discouraged that God cannot comfort.
3. Proverbs 18:10
"The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe."
Life is hard enough trying to remain hopeful amidst trials, but even worse trying to fight an enemy (the devil) you can’t see.
It’s like Job, stress, afflictions, and tribulations are coming from every side, and you are the intended target, and not to mention, the devil is having fun seeing you running for cover.
But amidst this common reality, we have hope. This verse gives us confidence, it says that God is a tower and not just any tower, but a strong tower. The devil can not breach this tower, hardship and trials can not breach this tower. When we are weak and feel like giving up because of our struggles—this verse reminds us that we can run into the tower of God and rest while the storms of life blow over, and while God brings to naught the evil plans of the devil.
4. Nehemiah 8:10
"Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength."
It’s okay to cry, but not to the point where we allow grieve to steal our joy. The devil wouldn’t mind seeing us in an everlasting state of grieve, a matter of fact, he will do everything and anything within his power to make us sad.
Grieve celebrates against hope, and it rejoices against joy. No wonder this verse encourages us not to grieve. Prolong grieve invites all kinds of negative things into our lives. Grieve causes us to see God’s promises for our lives afar off. Grieve may even force us to doubt God and be upset with Him.
So by God’s grace, allow this verse to strengthen and uplift your spirit and soul, and to see grieve for what it really is (a torn) and say no to it.
5. Joshua 1:9
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."
After the death of Moses, Joshua was lonely, he was also discouraged by the long journey ahead. But God encouraged Joshua to be strong, and He assured him that He would be with him to the very end.
It's normal to feel lonely, discouraged, and hopeless after the death of a loved. You may feel as though you have nothing more to live for.
But God says to cheer up. At this moment, your life may seem hard and overwhelming, but God is with you - He will see you through the hurt and the pain, the grief and the sorrow - just turn it all over to him.
6. Psalm 30:5
"For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for life; weeping may endure for a night, but [joy comes in the morning."
It's okay to cry at times - tears are a language God understands. This verse says that your weeping is only for a night. The night here doesn't mean the literal night, but the night here represents those overwhelming times of sadness.
So cry if you have to - God allows it.
But at some point, God expects you to stop crying. He expects you to find comfort in His promises - to trust in their integrity, and meditate on them - so that your sorrows may suddenly turn into joy.
Wait on God, exercise patience - because your appointment with joy is a sure promise from God.
7. Matthew 9:20-21
"And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him and touched the hem of his garment: For she said within herself, if I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole."
Throughout the ages, the devil has always prevented people from receiving God's deliverance. The devil operates best when we are burdened with troubles - he is a master at work, especially when we are in desperate need of help, and our hearts are overwhelmed with grief.
But these texts speak of a courageous woman who wanted help. She was indeed desperate, but her eyes and focus were on the Lord Jesus, not on her dire condition.
When we floored with grief and sorrow - it's time to focus upon God. The woman that these verses speaks about received her deliverance from the Lord - she made a conscious decision to seek the Lord.
This woman is a great example of faith and courage - she used the little strength she had left to focus her attention upon the Lord. If she can do it, so can we. Instead of giving attention to the troubles and trials that the devil may bring - let's focus our attention on God's deliverance, peace, and comfort.
