What the Bible Says About Endurance

Rev. Margaret Minnicks is an ordained Bible teacher. She writes many articles that are Bible lessons.

Most people, including Christians, fail when it comes to enduring hardships, trouble, and adversity. There is a very good reason they fail. They fail at endurance because they have not built up the strength to endure. Endurance is a key part of spiritual health and strength just like endurance is a key part of physical health and strength.

An athlete has to build physical endurance to succeed in sports. Christians have to build up spiritual endurance. In other words, people have to endure in order to endure. That might sound odd, but It becomes easier after one gets accustomed to enduring. The first time a situation happens where endurance is needed, it is extremely hard. The next time, it is much easier. When a person gets used to enduring, it turns out to be the easiest of all.

If you have never had to endure anything, yes, it will be hard. However, a person who has had to endure in the past is much better prepared to endure in the present and future.

Endurance: Definition

Endurance is the act of staying strong in the face of adversity. It is not giving in to an unpleasant situation or difficulty. It is bearing pain, hardships, and suffering no matter how bad it seems to be.

Some people define endurance as "stick-to-it-ness" as well as perseverance and steadfastness. It is pressing forward against all odds. The Bible refers to it as "fighting the good fight of faith."

Some synonyms for endurance include perseverance, tolerance, fortitude, patience, forbearance, acceptance, resignation, stamina, constancy, and staying power.

Preparing to Endure

If you have a problem enduring, here are some guidelines.

First of all, repent of any sin. Endurance comes much easier when you repent of any sin that is holding you hostage. Sin is very heavy and you need to lighten the load.

Take Inventory
Take inventory to determine what is keeping you from enduring. Find out what is in your life that is hurting you spiritually. Some people love to have pity parties instead of enduring. Are you one of them?

Get rid of anyone or anything that keeps you in bondage. You should eliminate any activity and people that keep you from enduring.

Participate in Spiritual Disciplines
You become stronger as you participate in spiritual disciplines such as praying, reading the Bible, praising God, worshipping God, and establishing an intimate relationship with Him. It also helps to fellowship with positive people.

Enduring is "Pushing Through"

You can endure by "pushing through." Pushing through means when you are faced with difficult situations, you do all you can to deal with them instead of complaining. Complaining only adds another layer to your adverse situation.

You push through by reading your Bible and doing what God says to do about your situation. Realize that God has given you everything you need to endure.

The Holy Spirit is always there to strengthen you and keep you in perfect peace when you rely on Him.

Use your community of faith when it is appropriate and beneficial. Often believers can get encouragement and support from other positive people that will help them to endure. Remember to stay clear of negative people who might distract you to do everything else except endure.

Scriptures About Endurance
