What Does It Take to Move God?

Eric is a born-again, Holy Spirit-filled believer and the author of "Believing Faith Speaks."

I am amazed that Christians have different views regarding what it takes to move God. Some Christians think God is moved by our tears. Some Christians think God is moved by our prayers. Many others think God is moved by our good works. While all of those things move us, they do not move God. Our tears, our prayers, and our good works might get God’s attention, but none of those things move God.

When we pray, our prayers activate our faith. It does not matter how long or how short we pray. What matters to God is that our prayers are faith-based. The one thing that prompts God to move is our faith. God is moved when we believe Him. We don’t have to cry, we don’t have to beg, and we don’t have to be perfect individuals. We only have to believe God to move Him. Hebrews 11:6 tells us that without faith it is impossible to please God. We move God when we please Him, and our faith is what pleases Him.

All the people Jesus healed had one thing in common: they believed Jesus was the Son of God, and that He was anointed by God to heal and cast out demons. This is in agreement with Acts 10:38, which says, “…God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”

Faith Moves God to Heal and Deliver

Faith is fundamental to pleasing God. When you understand the fundamentals of faith, it enables you to create endless possibilities. Faith is quintessential to pleasing God. Christianity’s foundation is built on faith. Faith is a particular and necessary part of worshiping God. It is the only way we can know God exists.

I recall the story of a young man who was once addicted to crack cocaine. Before he got addicted, this young man was a church-going believer. Over time, his addiction took control of his life. Eventually, he lost everything that he held dear. His wife, his children, and his home; all became collateral damage to his crack addiction. The only thing he did not lose was his faith in God. He kept listening to the word of God, praying and believing that God would deliver him from his addiction. It took twelve years, but God visited him and gave him back his dignity. That young man was me.

Against all odds, I believed God would deliver me, and He did. God gave me a second chance at life. I am a living witness that faith in God produces results. Whatever you are dealing with, know that your faith in God is your greatest asset. Nothing is impossible for you when you trust God.

The Faith of a Roman Officer

A Roman officer went to Jesus and pleaded with Him to come to his house and heal his servant who was in bed, paralyzed, and in terrible pain. Jesus told the officer that He would go to his house and heal his servant. But the officer told Jesus to only say the word from where you are, and his servant will be healed. Jesus was amazed at his faith. He said to the officer, “Go back home. Because you believed, it has happened.” And the young servant was healed that same hour (Matthew 8:5-13 NLT).

That is the kind of faith and genuine humility we should exercise when we seek God in prayer. When we believe God, we know He can will away cancer and speak a word to heal any disease that may burden us. Note that the Roman Officer was not a Jew. He was not circumcised, nor did he participate in the Jewish rituals that would merit him receiving anything from God. In other words, this man did not go to church, nor do any of the things we think would warrant us receiving from God. All he brought to Jesus was his faith, and he got immediate results. Why? Because his faith pleased God.

A Woman Is Healed of Internal Hemorrhaging

A woman who had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding came up behind Jesus and touched the fringe of His robe. She thought within, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.” Jesus turned around and said to her, “Daughter, be encouraged! Your faith has made you well.” And the woman was healed at that moment (Matthew 9:20-22 NLT).

Often when we are sick, we ask another believer, a pastor, or a priest to pray for us that we might be healed. But even when we can’t openly disclose our most private requests, our faith is enough to heal us. This woman had a disorder that forbade her to make a public request. Besides, to touch such a person, the law is reputed to be unclean. Had she exposed her request, by law, she could have been stoned to death. Therefore, she endeavored to transact the whole matter in private. Although she said nothing, she believed God could and would heal her, and she was made well.

Two Blind Men Get Healed

Two blind men followed Jesus, crying out, “Son of David, have mercy on us!” They heard that Jesus was staying at Simon Peter’s house. When they entered, Jesus asked them, “Do you believe I can do this?” They answered, “Yes, Lord.” Then Jesus touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith, let it be to you.” And their eyes were opened (Matthew 9:27-30).

There are times when we pray, and no matter how earnestly we pray, it seems as though we can’t find God. Even when we can’t find Him, God knows that we are looking for Him, and He knows what we need. The blind men in this story did not ask Jesus to give them sight; He already knew. All that is required to receive from God is that we believe that He is willing and able to give us what we ask. Whatever you ask, if you believe, He will do it. According to your faith, it will be done for you.

Faith Is Heaven's Currency

When you possess faith, you own the currency of heaven. It is as if you had money in your hand. You can’t wear the money, and you can’t eat it, but if you have it, you can buy clothes, food, and anything you need. Like money, faith can supply anything you need. With faith, you can acquire things that money cannot buy. For example, money can’t buy good health, but by faith, you can be healed. All the money in the world could not purchase my sobriety when I was addicted to crack cocaine. But by faith, I was delivered from my addiction.

Jesus said, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done. And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”

If you want mountain-moving faith that moves God, the next time you pray, remember that you have heaven’s currency in your hand. Psalm 103:2 says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits. Faith is one of those benefits.
