Two Types of Blessings

Rev. Margaret Minnicks is an ordained Bible teacher. She writes many articles that are Bible lessons.

God blesses all of us every single day. Some people take God's blessings for granted while others appreciate everything God does for them. Everything God does for us is a blessing because He doesn't have to do anything, but He does.

When we appreciate the two kinds of blessings, God rewards us with more blessings of both kinds.

Physical Blessings

When you think about it, it is easy to understand physical blessings. They are those blessings from God that pertain to our physical being. They include the provisions God gives us in the form of food, drink, and shelter so we can maintain a safe and secure life.

God gives us food.

"He gives food to every creature" (Psalm 136:25).

God gives us something to drink.

"Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost" (Isaiah 55:1).

God gives us shelter.

"Those who go to God Most High for safety will be protected by the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “You are my place of safety and protection" (Psalm 91:1).

Spiritual Blessings

Spiritual blessings are very different from physical blessings. While physical blessings are things God gives us for our bodies, spiritual blessings are those things God gives us for our spiritual being.

God is the giver of every good and perfect gift. Therefore, anything God gives us is good. He will never give us anything that will harm us. When God gives us spiritual blessings, He is giving us more of Himself.

God blesses our soul.

"Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits" (Psalm 103:1).

God gives us spiritual blessings.

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ" (Ephesians 1:3).

Balance of Blessings

God doesn't require us to pick and choose whether we want physical blessings or spiritual blessings. God wants us to have both, and both are available. However, most people tend to pray only for physical blessings to make themselves more comfortable with material things.

God wants us to have a balance of His blessings. Even if people aren't aware of the two types of blessings, God makes sure we have both.

Now that you know the difference, from now on pray for both. When you thank God, make sure you thank Him when He provides for you physically and when He provides for you spiritually.

Remember to balance your requests for both types of blessings.

Remember to balance your thanks for both types of blessings.

Physical blessings are also usually external that God gives for our physical well-being. Spiritual blessings are usually internal that God gives us so we can love, forgive and have compassion.

When God gives physical blessings, He is not included in those blessings. However, when He gives spiritual blessings, He includes Himself. We should want Him in our lives instead of only wanting the things He can give us.

No Cafeteria or Restaurant Style

God's blessings are not like the foods in a cafeteria where you go through a line and pick what you want. Then, when you reach the cashier, you pay for what you have selected. You do not have to pick and choose God's blessings. Neither do you have to pay for God's blessings.

God dispenses His blessings on those He loves, and He loves all of us. For that reason, He provides for us even when we don't ask for it. We never have to choose one blessing over another because God is in the blessing business, and He has enough blessings to go around. We don't have to pick from column A or column B. We can have physical blessings as well as spiritual blessings when we trust God with our whole heart, body, mind, and soul.
