Three Comings of Jesus Christ

Rev. Margaret Minnicks is an ordained Bible teacher. She writes many articles that are Bible lessons.

Three Comings of Jesus Christ

While most people talk about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, the Bible clearly speaks about three comings of Jesus. Christians should know exactly what those three comings are and how to look forward to the return of the Son of God..

First Coming Of Jesus Christ (Luke 2:11)

The first coming of Jesus Christ is called the Incarnation. That's when Jesus came in the flesh and was born of the Virgin Mary (Luke 2:11). He came to save all people

The first coming of Jesus has already happened. Christians celebrate Christmas every year to honor the birth of Jesus when He came as a baby in a manger. The Old Testament had prophesied the coming Messiah thousands of years before He came, according to John 1:1.

The first time Jesus came to earth, He came as a baby.

The Rapture (1Thessalonians 4:15-17)

"Rapture" simply means "caught up in the air." The word is not found in the Bible, but the concept is clearly stated in 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17.

During the rapture, the dead in Christ will rise first followed by the saved ones who are still alive. Both groups will be caught up together to meet the Lord in the air. The saved ones will go back with Jesus. The unsaved dead will stay where they are.

The unsaved ones who are still alive will be left on earth to go through a tribulation period. Some of them will perish, but some will become saved during this period. However, it won't be easy because the Holy Spirit will not be on earth. No other saints will be around to serve as godly examples. That's why it is wise for people to get saved before the rapture.

When Jesus comes for the saints during the rapture, it will be His second time coming to earth. His feet will not touch the land. Instead, He will stay in mid-air and take the living and dead saved people with Him.

Second Coming Of Jesus Christ (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17)

Jesus will return just as He promised. This is known as the Second Coming when He comes will come for the saints and takes them back to heaven for seven years. Most people know about the Second Coming, but they stop there without going any further in the biblical account.

The Second Coming will be the time when Jesus descends from heaven the same way He ascended in a cloud with nail prints still in His hands (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). He will stay in the air without His feet touching the earth during the rapture that is explained above.

People Affected By the Rapture

  • The dead in Christ will rise first.
  • The living saved will be caught up in the air with the dead.
  • The unsaved dead will stay in their graves.
  • The unsaved living will remain on earth to go through the tribulation.

Third And Final Coming of Jesus Christ (1 Thessalonians 3:12-13)

The Second Coming is when Jesus will return FOR the saints. The Third Coming is when Jesus will return WITH the saints that met Him in the air during the rapture (1 Thessalonians 3:12-13).

After the tribulation has passed, Jesus will return to earth with the saints to judge those who still do not know God and still have not confessed Jesus Christ as Lord. It is recorded in Zechariah 14:4 that this will be Jesus' final descent. This time His feet will touch the ground on Mount Olives.

Jesus will not return to heaven after His third coming. He will stay on earth and set up His kingdom.

The Bible depicts God as a Warlord, this is False. God is Good, Not Evil. All stories depicting God as Evil are Blasphame. Jesus has come to earth many times to purify himself to become a companion to God. Jesus said to be like him. He is the way. That also implies He was like us at one time. Purify self.

george on July 23, 2020:

I appreciate anyone who preaches the Bible. Let me say that Jesus has been born to Mary that was His first coming. Upon His Resurrection after the Crucifixion was His second coming. He will return again (Number 3) for the rapture of the church/ holy believers in Him. And lastly we return to set up a 1000 year reign as He throws the anti-christ into the lake of fire. If you add it all up according to the Scriptures, being the The Holy Bible, Jesus will visit this earth a total of 4 times. The last two references are found in Revelation as you know. Just trying to set the record straight, because I believe that Christians should be completely accurate when teaching the Bible.

Riyan, YES! A second and a third coming.

Riyan on April 13, 2019:

Now it is third coming am I right

jon haft on January 17, 2019:

This is what I get from the bible:

1)Jesus comes in the clouds and gathers up all his saints (elect) Rev 1:7, Matt 24, Mark 13, 1 thess 4.

2) at that moment we shall be changed in a twinkling of an eye

3)every eye will see him in the clouds rev 1:7 (not a secret)

4)there is a trumpet 1 thess 4, Matt 24, mark 13

5)this takes place after the apostasy. Matt 24, 1 thess 2

6) takes place after the tribulation (could be 1/2 of 7 years or 7 years)

7)takes place before Gods wrath (his saints are saved. those that have endured until the end)

8)then after God's wrath, Jesus will come on a white horse and stand on mt olives and take back His kingdom

so looking at all of these scriptures, the 2nd Coming IS the same as the Rapture.

As you see me go(ascend), I will come again (in the clouds)

Hi on December 07, 2018:

The Jesus Spirit is within every human being, always. There is no separation, ever.

Brycely Neo Britto on December 03, 2018:

Hi,Thank you because you helped me for my project and I hope that bI will get a good mark!!

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on September 30, 2018:

harry, In 2 Corinthians 13:1, Paul tells the Corinthian church, "This is the third time I am coming to you." That has absolutely nothing to do with the three comings of Jesus Christ.

Paul had already visited the church twice before. He was just letting them know he would be back to emphasize the teachings he had done on the two previous trips.

Jesus, his spirit, is right here within me and you. Do not look here or there for he is within. He never left.

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on July 26, 2018:

Thanks for giving her suggestions, Jay. From my understanding, she is going to teach the youth about the comings of Jesus Christ.

Jay C OBrien from Houston, TX USA on July 26, 2018:

If you do teach the youth of your church, teach that God is Good, All Good and always has been. Renounce all passages which depict God as Violent as Blasphemy. God is Peaceful, Merciful and Kind. God/Jesus would never kill people as described in the Book of Joshua.

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on July 26, 2018:

Pr.Soren Sanjeet, I am glad you found the article interesting enough to teach to the youth at your church. I hope it goes well. Let me know if it does.

Pr.Soren Sanjeet on July 25, 2018:

Third coming of jesus christ really it is very usefull passages for me i loved it very much and todays evening i am going to teach our churches youth through this passeges in youth club.

Thankyou very much.

Jay C OBrien from Houston, TX USA on March 25, 2017:

The coming of Christ just might be about elevating our thinking of God. What is God like? In the Bronze Age God was a Warrior who flew around and killed people. He had Jealousy, Vengeance and Wrath.

Let us Progress and understand what Jesus taught: God is Good, always Good and without negative human emotions. God Accepts you just as Jesus accepted everyone and never condemned.

Any story in the Bible or without describing God as Violent or with bad emotions is blasphemy.

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on March 24, 2017:

Hi Marsha, thanks for reading and responding to my article. Feel free to read some of my other Christian articles.

To answer your question, I have been a Bible and Christian Education teacher for over 50 years. I have two master degrees from seminary. I study the Bible and Bible-related materials all the time.

Marsha Musselman from Michigan, USA on March 12, 2017:

Great job laying out the truths about this, or these comings of Jesus Christ. I hope to peek at more of your work later on.

I'm home from work for three months following a knee replacement surgery. I'm hoping to get back into writing for hubpages and some other places too possibly, and have more time for studying the Bible.

I'm a bit curious under whose teachings you learned this? It would be interesting to find we may have similar backgrounds.

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on January 30, 2017:

Jay C OBrien, OK...I will check out your topics on HubPages.

Jay C OBrien from Houston, TX USA on January 30, 2017:

Thank you. It is already on Hubpages, "Atlantians to the Mideast." There are other topics as well.

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on January 30, 2017:

Jay C OBrien, thanks again for the addition to your original comments. That is so much valuable information. Have you thought about putting it all together in an e-book or in some other form?

Jay C OBrien from Houston, TX USA on January 30, 2017:

Thank you. Here are a couple more citations from the Bible with a conclusion.

He bowed the heavens, and came down; thick darkness was under his feet. He rode on a cherub, and flew; he was seen upon the wings of the wind. He made darkness around him a canopy, thick clouds, a gathering of water. Out of the brightness before him coals of fire flamed forth. The Lord thundered from heaven; the Most High uttered his voice. He sent out arrows, and scattered them – lighting, and routed them.

An oracle concerning Egypt. See, the Lord is riding on a swift cloud and comes to Egypt; the idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence, and heart of the Egyptians will melt within them.

Thanks to the Rabbis a record has been preserved that describes events long ago for our review. Today we can recognize an aircraft when it is described to us. Aircraft and pilots were misidentified as God or angels in Old Testament accounts. An advanced, high-tech people came in contact with low-tech people and were misidentified as God/Lord/Angels. Other ancient religions have similar accounts (Greek, Hebrew, Persian and Hindu).

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on January 29, 2017:

Jay C OBrien, thanks so much for adding your teaching to my article. I will keep those things in mind that you mentioned. I also began to follow you to read your articles when they are posted.

Jay C OBrien from Houston, TX USA on January 29, 2017:

From article:

"The Second Coming will be the time when Jesus descends from heaven the same way He ascended in a cloud with nail prints still in His hands."

Search for the number of times The Lord is associated with or in a cloud. There are many references and here are a few.

As I looked, a stormy wind came out of the north: a great cloud with brightness around it and fire flashing forth continually, and in the middle of the fire, something like gleaming amber. In the middle of it was something like four living creatures.

The Lord went in front of them in a pillar of cloud by day, to lead them along the way, and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light, so that they might travel by day and by night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.

The angel of God who was going before the Israelite army moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from in front of them and took its place behind them.

At the morning watch the Lord in the pillar of fire and cloud looked down upon the Egyptian army; threw the Egyptian army into panic.

For the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, before the eyes of all the house of Israel at each stage of their journey.

What is with the Lord/Jesus being in a cloud?
