I search the scriptures to discover scriptural truth and the deep things of God.
The Primacy of the Word of God
The Word of God, which is also known as the Holy Scriptures, refers to the sacred writings of Christianity. The term "Word of God" stems from three different Greek words:
- Graphe—The written word of God, which is the Bible.
- Logos—Used to refer to the man Jesus Christ. In John 1:1, the "Word" used there stems from this Greek word, logos.
- Rhema—This is the Spoken word of God. It is not written. God speaks this word to us through our spirit at a particular time for a specific purpose. It however does not differ from the written Word of God significantly. They are mostly in congruence.
But one thing is certain. The Bible is inspired by God. It was written by Men of God who were moved by the Holy Spirit. The Bible was not written from one's own intellect and interpretation—it didn't come from the impuse of man but by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:20-21; 2Timothy 3:16-17).
Further Analysis of the Primacy of the Word
Now, the word of God carries so much power. The Bible has a huge chunk of evidence and track record backing this claim. The fact is and remains that what is written in the Bible carries some kind of power that most us don't know. We mostly see the Bible as a mere book. But I am here to tell you it has power.
Hebrews 3:12 says, "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of the soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." What this means is that the word of God is able to do the impossible. Can you divide joints and marrow? Spirit and soul? Thoughts and intentions of the human heart? These are practically impossible actions. But the word of God is able to do precisely that.
Upon hearing just a word (come) from Jesus with faith, Peter began to walk on water. If Peter could walk on water by hearing just one word, what are we doing with the scriptures we memorize every day?
Hebrews 11:3 says , "By faith, we understand that the entire universe was created by the word of God..." I am just trying to implore you to come to the understanding that that Bible which you don't read or read at your own time for probably pleasure or for entertainment has so much power. Take note that the Bible is not a bedtime story. "Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God," says Jesus Christ.
The Power of the Word of God
1. The word brings us to Salvation.
Romans 10:17 says, "So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Salvation starts by hearing the word of God. Remember the word of God refers to Jesus Christ (John 1:14). Receiving the word of God is tantamount to receiving Jesus. Also remember that the word of God always calls for a response. This is because it condemns and converts. So it's either accepted or rejected. Believe in the word of God today and you shall be saved.
2. Points To Sanctification:
I will define Sanctification as the process of growth leading to perfection. When we are sanctified, we become more like God. The word of God describes the very nature of God—what He looks like, His plans for us and even how He does things. Jesus said in John 17:17: "Sanctify them in the truth (the Word of God); thy word is truth."
3. A Sword
Do you know that the greatest weapon God has given to His children is His word. The devil is a smart spirit being. You can't argue with the devil. He's smarter than you. When Eve tried to argue with the devil, we see the result (Genesis 3). But when Jesus saw the devil, He declared, it is written...". When we live by it is written, no weapon formed against us shall prosper, because it is written.... Ephesians 6:17 says, "And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."
4. The word of God leads to Success:
In Joshua 1:8, God told Joshua, "This book of the law should not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success." The word of God is all we need if we want to succeed in life. Someone who reads the word and meditate on it day and night is like a tree planted by the streams of water, that yields it's fruit in season, and it's leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. Reading, meditating on, and practicing the word of God in our lives is a recipe for good success. The word is also able to guide us now and into the future (Psalm 119:105).
- Relish the word (I Peter 2:2-3; Psalm 19:7-10).
- Read it (Ezra 7:10; Deuteronomy 17: 18-19).
- Remember it (Deuteronomy 6:6-9).
- Research it (2 Timothy 2:15).
- Respond to it (Hebrews 4:1-2).
I implore and challenge you by the mercies of God to read this article again and again, until you fully understand and apply it in your daily life. Your life will change for the better. God bless you for reading.
