Bible Study: Lost In The Darkness Part 1 of 4

I am a certified pastor and an active Christian of over 15 years, The Lord has made His voice know to me. I have heard and seen His angels.

How Can It Be Dark If There Is Light?

The purpose of this study is to help YOU get closer to God. The content within this study will lead you down a path of discovery. You will discover how much God really cares for you and how that impacts your life. This is a lifestyle changing journey so I must warn you, your outlook on life may change. You may be happier, more hopeful, and more joyful as a result.

This is week one in a four-week-long study. Each week, we will go over one aspect of finding light in the darkness. This is for YOU. To help you grow closer to Him. As a result, I have three recommendations:

1. Pray before you begin each reading

2. Find a quiet place to be close to God while you read- You just might hear His voice

3. Have an open spirit. Share with God that you are open and ready to receive whatever He has for you. Whether it's blessings, words of encouragement, praise, or just a moment alone in peaceful silence.

This week we will discover what God says about the darkness:

1. What does it mean to be lost in the dark?

2. How does one get lost?

3. How do we keep our heads above water?

1. What Does it Mean to be Lost in The Dark?

First and most importantly, let's read about what will happen if we get lost in the dark. In Ephesians 2: 4-6 we learn that, “...God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus”.

How amazing! No matter how dark and bleak things may seem, God's mercy surpasses it all. In this scripture, we learn that God knows that we are, "dead in our trespasses". He knows we are stuck in the dark, yet He raises us up and sets us beside Him at His table.

Even David knew that God's mercy is great and everlasting, even in hopeless situations. In Psalms119:175-176, he wrote, "Let me live that I may praise you, and may your laws sustain me. I have strayed like a lost sheep. Seek your servant, for I have not forgotten your commands."

In this case, the individual knows they are in the dark. They know that they have strayed from the flock. Being lost in the dark means something different to every individual.

What does it mean to you? Is it that you don't hear His voice, are lonely, or can't find hope? In what ways are you lost in the dark? Are your job, relationships, school, money, or other problems haunting your every thought?

Reflect on these things as you ask God for wisdom.

2. How does one get lost?

In order to discuss how one gets lost, let's take an example straight from The Bible. Please read one of the many parables Jesus told in Luke. This parable can be found in chapter 15 berses 11 through 24. Please read these verses.

Notice that, even though the son sinned and was in the dark, he was still welcomed home with open arms. You know, the state of darkness plays tricks. It tells lies and makes small mistakes seem like big ones. In this case, the darkness instilled a sense of fear. This fear kept the son from coming home to his father. He was embarrassed and afraid of what his father would think. To the son's surprise, he was welcomed with open arms into the light of day. '

Remember, EVERYONE makes mistakes. As soon as Adam and Eve found darkness, humanity was doomed to fail. That's why we have Jesus. So next time you make a mistake, stray from His flock, or lose hope, remember that He will always welcome you back with open arms. As long as you recognize your mistakes and claim Jesus as your savior, There will always be a flicker of hope, even when you can't see it.

3. How Do We Keep Our Heads Above Water?

Circling back, how do we survive being lost in the dark? How do we keep our heads above water? Sometimes it feels like we're drowning in darkness. It's like the light has been swallowed up.

In 1 Corinthians 10:12-14 (NIV) Paul shares some beautiful words of wisdom.

Let's take a look:

12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

Everyone gets a little lost sometimes. The good news is that He has thrown us a life vest. He will ever give us anything we can not handle. That's why it is so important to be able to talk to Him and more importantly, listen. He is the small flicker in the darkness that keeps you going. Let that flicker become a flame. Kindle it and let is guide your footsteps.
