Jesus the Christ, it is written that he was conceived by a woman called Mary who was at that time married to a man called Joseph. The Bible however states that Mary was not impregnated by her husband, but the "Holy Spirit" came down and planted his heavenly seed in her making her the woman who made immaculate conception having a meaning.
With all this confusion on Mary being pregnant without knowing her husband, what last name would the baby have? We know for sure that he could not be called Jesus Mary or Jesus Joseph. Could his last name have been Jesus God? Well the truth is that back in those days last name was not much of a big deal. As a matter of fact, people rarely had last name then. They simply went by titles and attachments. Let me explain further.
Jesus Last Name.
Let's take a look at some other Biblical characters and see how the Bible refers to them. Let's take a look at Jesus's mother Mary for instance. Mary's father was Joachim. She was then called Mary of Joachim “ referring to her father's loin. Her mother's name was Anne. So Mary could also be called Mary of Anne referring to her mother's loin. Also, since she dwelled in Nazareth. She could also be called Mary of Nazareth. When she married she could also be called Mary of Joseph. So it was not a matter of last names, but rather a matter of who you are from, where you are from or what occupation you did.
When Jesus was born, no last name was given. He was simply known as Jesus but not of Joseph, even though he recognized Joseph as his earthly father, he knew a greater father from which he was his loin. But since he was of his mother's womb, he could be referred to as Jesus of Mary. He could also be referred to as Jesus of Nazareth or Jesus the carpenter.
Jesus the Christ Last Name Changes
When Jesus disappeared for many years and came back filled with the power to work wondered. His teachings, preaching and miracles became famous with the lands. People proclaimed him the messiah aka the Son of God. This was a very bad title to have back in those days as blasphemy was punishable by death. The head of the religious sect could never see a simple man as the Messiah. So a rift was developed between the political minded and ignorant religious sector and Jesus. At that point, Jesus was not referred to as simply Jesus, he was now called Jesus the Christ (Christ meaning the anointed one) or simply Christ. Some also referred to him as Jesus the Messiah. This reference from the time he was walking among men and working miracles to the day he was crucified has remained with him. In modern times, he is simply remembered as Jesus Christ. Son of God.
But Why No Last Name?
In ancient times people didn’t always have surnames/family names/last names. The Romans used them, then it became unfashionable. It only became a trend in Europe since the middle ages, in China they have been using surnames since the 2nd century BCE. So last names were not always around. As a matter of fact, there needs to be a complete writing on the origin of last names. You may be shocked at your own last name and what it says about your family lineage.
Many Other Bible characters never had a last name.
- John the Baptist
- Abraham of Terah
- Zacchaeus of Jericho
- Judas of Simon Iscariot
- Mary of Magdala
Jesus had no last name simply because last names were just not that important for people to have back in those days. Last names were created by Europeans as a measure for countless reproduction and to place ownership of. Jesus had no surname so you yourself really don't need one if you are truly following in your Messiahs path.
