Divine Favor: Definition

Finding favor from humans such as from your spouse, boss, teacher or pastor means getting their approval. It is when they validate you, accept you, and treat you in a special way.

Favor from God is divine with the same definitions as the favor from humans except God favor is much more powerful. It is akin to God's grace and His mercy that endure forever. Those whose walk is blameless receive favor and honor from the Lord, according to Psalm 84:11.

There are so many examples in Scripture of biblical people who received favor from God. They did and you can do the same.

Take a look at their lives and see what they did to receive God's favor.

Noah Received God's Favor

In Genesis, the very first book of the Bible, Noah is described as a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.as a just man when everybody else around him was considered evil.

People mocked Noah was he obeyed God to build an ark at the time while it didn't rain from above like it does today. The rain came from the ground instead of from the sky. Therefore, the people during Noah's day thought it was farfetched to think a flood would come. However, Noah believed God. Noah obeyed God. It did rain for forty days and forty nights, and a great flood was upon the earth.

Because of Noah's obedience, he received favor and honor from God, according to Genesis 6:8.

Abraham Received God's Favor

Abraham was chosen by God, blessed by God and favored by God, according to Genesis 12. That favor showed up on many occasions in Abraham's life from the time God told him to get out of his country. Abraham obeyed God even though he didn't know where he was going. God showed him on the way to go down to Egypt. There he had an encounter with Pharoah until God sent him back.

Because of his obedience and faith, God made Abraham the "Father of many nations."

An important lesson from Abraham's favor is that because God bestows favor on one family member does not mean that he will bestow favor on all family members. For example, divine favor rested on Abraham's son Isaac, but not on Abraham's older son Ishmael. Then favor was given to Issac's son Jacob but not to his twin brother Esau, according to Malachi 1:2-3.

Jacob Received God's Favor

People might not understand why God gave favor and honor to one brother but not his twin.

Like his father and grandfather, the favor of God was repeatedly on Jacob's life. For instance, Jacob escaped the wrath of his own brother and the mistreatment of his uncle Laban.

Joseph Received God's Favor

Jacob had twelve sons and one daughter. The story of Jacob's son, Joseph, is told in Genesis 37 through Genesis 50. Favor rested on Joseph but not on his eleven brothers.

Even though Joseph was mistreated by his brothers and was sold into slavery and spent many years in prison for a crime he did not commit, God was working with Joseph in a supernatural way so much so that he was promoted to be the second in command in the same place where he had been a slave and a prisoner. Joseph was put in a position to help his brothers who had mistreated him years before. That's how God's favor works sometimes.

Moses Received God's Favor

God's favor rested on Moses from the time he was a baby until he died 180 years later. Moses was born at a time when Pharaoh had decreed that all male babies be drowned in the Nile River. Moses' mother hid him as long as she could before she made a floating basket for her baby and sent him to be put in the river by his older sister Miriam.

Favor rested on Moses to such an extent that Pharaoh’s daughter found the baby in the river and rescued him. Moses grew up in Pharaoh's household. He received God's favor, according to Exodus 33:12-13.

Ruth Received God's Favor

Ruth found favor in the eyes of God through Naomi, her mother-in-law. After Ruth's husband died in Moab, she followed Naomi to Bethlehem to a country she didn't know and to a God she didn't know.

Because God's favor was on Ruth's life, she married a wealthy man in a faraway land named Boaz and ended up in the lineage of Jesus Christ, according to the short book that bears her name.

The Nation of Israel Received God's Favor

God often referred to Israel as His chosen people. Therefore, favor rested on the nation from the time they prayed to be set from slavery in Egypt until they reached Canaan, the promised land that was filled with milk and honey.

God reminded the Israelites over and over again how He had found favor with them by leading them safely through the wilderness with the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night.

David Received God's Favor

Readers of the Bible can't help but see that divine favor rested on David from the time he was a boy until after he become the second king of Israel.

As a lad, he defeated Goliath when he brothers couldn't. He was anointed king of Israel when his brothers thought the position would be theirs.

As a king, David was in God's favor so much so that God referred to him as “a man after his own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14).

Mary Received God's Favor

God's favor was not limited to the Old Testament. In the New Testament, the angel Gabriel told Mary that she had "found favor with God" and would bear a son and name him Jesus (Luke 1:30).

Jesus Received God's Favor

When Jesus was born the angelic host announced to the shepherds that God would send "peace to men on whom his favor rests" (Luke 2:14).

God found favor with his son in everything He did. In fact, at His baptism thirty years later, something like a dove landed on Jesus and a voice was heard from heaven saying, "This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased (Matthew 3:17).

How You Can Walk in God's Favor

Just as God found favor with biblical figures, He can and will find favor with you when you purpose to obey Him and do the right thing. Then divine favor will come upon you and overtake you.

Divine favor is not the result of luck but of obedience.

As a child of God, righteous ones are in line to receive divine favor. Even if you have never received favor in the past, release your faith and believe that you can have it in all areas of your life right now. Whatever you have lost, God will restore to you because that's the kind of God that He is.

No doubt everyone wants to walk in divine favor. However, not all people know how to do it. If favor is missing from your life, it is not God's fault because He has plenty of favor to dispense on His people, and He never runs out of it for the righteous, according to Psalm 102:13.

Ways You Can Receive God's Favor

  1. Obey God and follow His commandments. When you obey God, you put yourself in the right position to receive God's favor.

  3. Affirm It. Never doubt it, but affirm that it is available for you.
  4. Acknowledge it. Know that God's favor can be in your life.
  5. Act like it. Begin to act like you have divine favor even if you don't know it at the time.
  6. Speak like It. Use positive words instead of negative words about God's favor. Speak like you walk in divine favor. Watch what you say because your words become action, and your action become deeds.
  7. Embrace it. Embrace God's favor by accepting compliments that others give you because they see God operating in your life. Just say, "Thank you" when people compliment you. Don't downplay any compliment.
  8. Pay attention. Pay attention to what God is doing instead of paying attention to what others are doing to hinder you from walking in God's favor.
