God Wants to Bless You — Devotional on Genesis 1:28

Pastor of Iglesia Conexiones, a baptist church in Jessup, MD. B.A. in Bible, B.S. English Ed., M.S. in Educational Leadership.

"And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:28, ESV)

From A Blessing to A Curse

God wants to bless humanity, He wants to bless us, God wants to bless you. From the time He created the first man and the first woman, He sought to bless us all. He wanted us to be fruitful (prosper), to multiply (procreate), to subdue the Earth (use it for our benefit), and to rule over all the creatures on Earth. God wanted us to enjoy life on Earth to the uttermost.

Unfortunately, Adam and Eve's rebellion against God brought upon them (and upon us all) a curse, sin, pain, suffering, and death. God wanted us to be blessed, but Adam and Eve's rebellion brought us a curse.

What The Bible Is All About

Beginning with Genesis, the Bible tells the story of how God wants to bless humanity, how humanity misses out on God's blessings through sin, and how God has been working throughout history to restore humaniy to a state of blessing through Jesus Christ.

God's desire for every human being is that they be blessed! But humanity misses out on God's blessings through sin. Nevertheless, those who find forgiveness in Jesus Christ are blessed—just as David wrote: "Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit" (Psalm 32:2, ESV).

When we repent of our sins and come to God through Jesus Christ for forgiveness, God forgives us and blesses us with all spiritual blessings: "3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 1:3, ESV).

What about You?

What about you? Does God want to bless you too? Yes! God wants to bless you. God wants you to enjoy life to the fullest, just as He has designed it for you. However, whenever you disobey God, you are bringing upon yourself pain, suffering, and even death.

Whenever you sin you invite on yourlsef a curse—but whenever you obey God, then God will bless you for as long as you remain obedient. But it all starts when you believe in jesus Christ and invite Him into you heart.

Different Kinds of Blessings

Now, there are different kinds of blessings. First of all, there are spiritua blessings. If you have believed in Jesus Christ and asked Him to save you from your sins and God's judgment, then you have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in heaven.

What you need to do is learn what those spiritual blessings are—and this is why you need to read your Bible and learn more about God's will for your life.

Then, there are earthly blessings—temporal blessings. These blessings for the different stages and seasons in life, but they don't necessarily last all your life. God lets you taste here on Earth a little bit of the blessings you will find in Heven, but only a little bit. He's just getting you ready for eternity.

Look for The Heavenly Blessings

It is unfortunate that many work so hard for the eartlhly blessings—the temporal blessings—instead of trying to enjoy the spiritual blessings God has given them through Jesus CHrist. Why do they do this? Because they are letting sin influence their lives.

Instead of doing this, we should focus on enjoying the many spiritual blessings God has given us: forgiveness, salvation, a personal relatioshsip with Him, the presence of his Spirit in us, and many, many more.

Do You Want to Be Blessed?

Do you want to be blessed? Of course you do! How then can you be blessed? Repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, that He is the Son of God, that He died for our sins, and that He came back to life (rose from the dead).

From then on, look to have a close relationship with Him through reading the Bible, praying, and going to church. Obey His commandments, and you will see that God will bring many bessings into your life—perhpas not the wants you wanted, but surely the ones that you need.

Questions for Reflection

  • Have you received Jesus Christ in your heart?
  • What blessings do you desire?
  • What sins are there in your life?
  • What commandments does God want you to obey?
  • Pray and ask God to bless you.
