the length of a kiss

i wondered as you thought,
a warm face, but cautious smile;
for my eyes looked hard, sturdy;
but they constructed no wall,
instead they pushed forward
so they may better see your light;
austere but dignified in its modesty,
grand as a clipper ship in its majesty
before the headwinds that called
sorrow and loneliness upon your life;
but the dark skies have soon departed;
now only a deep sun making shadows
of the vessel upon which we now board;
for you are not the parched mind
of desert stress; but an oasis, parting
the sea and hot air before the clear
water coolness i have longed; as our eyes,
inches apart, flamed by intimate urgency,
no longer measure longing by distance,
but instead by the length of a kiss
