Chance: Brenda Arledge Poetry Prompt Response 51
Alyssa is an avid reader, writer, and coffee enthusiast. She loves sharing thoughts, ideas, and creative writings with the world.
The prompts are back and I've been mulling chance around in my head. It started with a simple phrase and as I thought about it, the idea began to take shape. Inspired by the hypocrisy prevalent in today's world, I wanted to travel back in time to explore the same theme. The result is the little piece below.
As always, a big thank you to Brenda for gently encouraging our creative spirits.
Enjoy.
They said my heart was black
evil was my game
trysts with Satan
landed me on this stake.
Pointing and jeering
was I not ashamed?
Death will come
but surely I see the error of my ways
Do I not want to be saved?
A far cry
from the starless nights
when they'd knock on the door
and beg for a place
in my bed.
But it is me
who holds blame
for embracing the same earthly pleasures?
Me, to repent
for sharing my knowledge
and healing them
with the bounty of this land?
Look around
Hell is here
and evil resides
in their leers.
Oh no,
I welcome the flames
kissing my skin
Salvation in disguise
carrying me home.
