Breakfast: Brenda Arledge Poetry Prompt Response Week 43
Slowly, but surely, I'm making my way through these wonderful weekly prompts. Breakfast reminded me of one of my favorite Johnny Cash quotes:
This morning, with her, having coffee.
In typical fashion, I chose a more sad route to the prompt.
Thank you Brenda!
Enjoy.
Breakfast:
It's always the same:
laughter floating on sunshine
curtains softly dancing with the breeze
and the birds,
oh how their sweet serenade
spoke to your heart.
Your hand gently resting
on that old, chipped mug,
so vivid in my mind
this entire house oozes
Recommended
with your presence
but it's strongest here
while I sit at our oak table
and when you took your last breath
the laughter died with you;
the sun refuses to shine
the curtains, now dusty and stagnant
Even the birds are silent.
Everything, once bright and beautiful,
has rotted away,
leaving nothing but muted grays.
I'm left here, alone
trying to make sense
of this strange new place
but all I see are snippets of the past,
and your old chipped mug
empty and cold.
