Pandora's Box

Fragments lifted from the pages of the long letter I've been writing to myself forever.

If self indulgent please excuse me. It's too late now, they are out of the box.

New Years Poem 2000

Solitary

snowed in

saturated with the

sweet fat of your

culture

rotting

flesh

and bones

looking forward

to a handful

of earth to eat

you carry on.

You have a future

but you missed

the boat

you coloured

outside the

lines

you declined

and now

you wade through it

the stream of things

you push

you carry on.

There is a lull

the snow

is dropping

a forgotten joy

is melting

you go with the flow

you carry on.

You brush your hair

you feed the cats

you walk the dog

you see the

world in bright

bursts of light

you get the timing right

you carry on.

Me 2006

Manic and madness

and afternoon tea.

Another murdered day

and the suspect is me!

Thanksgiving Monday 2006

I can see the latest

colours come walking

down the street.

Soft pavement at

the feet.

Lovely leather covered

feet.

So pampered

and so neat.

As you're

walking down

the street.

I can see the latest

fashion come walking

down the street.

Pastoral print

replete.

You do not stop

to greet.

Soft pavement

at the feet.

Lovely leather covered

feet.

So pampered

and so neat

walking,

walking down

the street.

June 6 2009

A day at the beach

kicking sand around

in my head.

edges everywhere

no baseline

boxes made of lace

enclosing the deep

dark shade of summer.

Hello Beth from Tennessee! I did a quick scan and did not find a earlier comment so welcome to my world, thanks for the compliment, I hope I haven't misrepresented myself. I really like the pic too (obviously) :). A much younger version of me...sigh The poems are as well.

Dear Mar, Thank you for the visit at my 'first' poems on Hub Pages. This page was sleeping for awhile, and one day I noticed that it was my highest rated hub, and I woke it up, but it kept dozing off, I changed the title and added the photo (which was actually a slide). Really enjoying playing around with nifty new slide converter. Thanks for the flattery! Flattery will get you everywhere. It's a bit of a shock to see the 'young me' photo, especially when I look in the mirror. Mucho gracie.

      "Manic and madness

      and afternoon tea.

      Another murdered day

Snap. To me, this instantly highlighted the way I generate my own anti-productivity by wanting to do too much, and over thinking it while wasting my time essentially drinking tea. I don't know if that's what you meant when you had written it, but it's what it provoked in me.

Also, these poems are amazing! I very rarely partake in reading such things, and even less often enjoy them... You, however, are the exception. Beautiful photo as well!

I am very impressed with the "Pandora's Box" entro to this collection of unique (!) poems/prose. Particularly Me 2006 "Another Murdered Day

      And the suspect is me...."

      stellar! completely different!

      New Year's Poem 2000

Another day in the life....yes, I can relate; I think, a little melancholy..."business as usual." Day in day out...sameness and repetition...

such introspection ! Truly do like this collection, Snakeslane.

and The Townspeople - a very very interesting way in which to view passersby....as you gaze at their shod feet . And attire...again, completely unexpected and unique.

That's OK. A good sign, actually! Means you're still fully alive, aware and processing it. We're all rough around the edges at various life stages and to varying degrees, but it's recognizable as being the true gems which each of us is. The process is enhanced, even implemented, by one's own clarifying recognition of its nature in early (& at all) life stages.

      :-)

Thank you nellieanna for sharing so much here, your story hits so close to home. It's like mining yourself for gold. Or at least a gem. Reminds me of (Who's?) song: "I'm just an old chunk of coal, but I'm gonna be a diamond some day..." Who sang that? Help!

    • Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna Hay 6 years ago from TEXAS

Yes. And no need to explain. I know. I am very much a 'be in the here and now' person too; - and as the nows may seem to be on the dwindling path in my personal future, I think to me, "So? - Weren't they always?" There is absolutely no security in any future or amount of it; but the nows one is living are what are the reality, which is always precious and available to be clearly realized. Any future I may have coming will arrive disguised as "now"! Sometimes I just have to chuckle when either age or gender cards are played. I have to be thinking, once more, "So?" haha.

I am also very thankful for this opportunity here and now in this 'cyber place'. It's aroused me from a kind of private stupor, poetry-wise. Mine have lodged just as they were hand-written, on notebook paper, which during a particularly prolific time about 40 or so years ago, I did think to fasten into folders, each growing to about an inch and a half thick; there accumulated 7 of those up till the mid-80s when life became more wonderful and kept me busy living it and still writing about it, but with less volume!

Also many were jotted down on scraps of paper or nicely penned into pretty blank books - so there are many of those, as well. I have no idea how many poems and 'fragments' there are, all told. And at one point a very mean person burned many of my early ones, and thought he'd also destroyed the then current notebook of them, except that I'd made a duplicate notebook of those - also handwritten.

What's happened here on Hubpages, once I decided to share my poetry on here (which I'd not intended, but just thought I'd write articles) is that it forced me to transcribe at least some of them to my computer! So far, the ones I've transcribed number 1,059, according to my Mac's running count, and I keep them as separate files, one to a file. I haven't published all of those, but quite a few are in the 85 poetry collection hubs thus-far published. (another one in the woks).

Surprising, for not intending to publish poetry here! haha The ones I've transcribed have put a dent in the whole stash, but not too big a dent and I am still writing new poetry, though not as prolifically. I keep a couple of blank books nearby and still grab a scrap of paper if needed when inspiration hits.

Of course the encouraging feedback here is like manna to a writer. I had received some very private encouragement in past years, but didn't much expect to have wider acceptance, if and when I ever did expose it more. So it is very encouraging, as you say. And much of the encouragement which I'm seeing that you are getting is from people whose encouragement has much substance. So you can be very pleased with your reception and encouraged to share more and more! I hope so, purely selfishly. It's a joy to read good stuff! You have a fascinating mind and perspective!

Thank you for the visit and kind words Nellieanna, I was struck immediately when reading your profile and some of your poems that we share (in our writing) a similar oeuvre or style or sensibility, hard to pin it down exactly. I've always tried to adhere to the "be here now" philosophy, as any poet would, but as I get older it's turned into be here now, Now! I'm just so thankful I have this opportunity to share with so many talented writers here on Hub Pages, and happy to have some feedback, it's so encouraging.

Amazing how much we seem to have in common, both in history of our very private and prolific writing, not shared up till now; and I sense something in our styles - in the brevity, the inherent whammy. You mention 'precious days' in a comment - perhaps we share that reality as well.

      I love these lines:

      "boxes made of lace

      enclosing the deep

      dark shade of summer. . . "

It's mysteriously graphic and easy on the eyes, as well.

....frankly my dear I do give a damn! lol lol and yes it's true - words in your hands are like beautifully sculpted moments in my mind ....... you have created your own language - and epi-man likes to see that in any writer .....

Hello, snakeslane, The first poem I can relate to, for two dear people I knew so well both died on New Years Day one year apart (2009 and 2010 respectfully). All your poems on this page are beautifully written, to me I can see the pictures in my mind. You have done well over the years, so good to meet a fellow poet. I hope you stop by and read some of mine. :)

Wow this is powerful, from the gut, from the soul poetry. You let it loose and it weaved a course to our hearts. I felt this right between my eyes, you came out swinging. Bravo, loved all of them. I will be back to read more.
