Pandora's Box

Fragments lifted from the pages of the long letter I've been writing to myself forever.

If self indulgent please excuse me. It's too late now, they are out of the box.

New Years Poem 2000

Solitary

snowed in

saturated with the

sweet fat of your

culture

rotting

flesh

and bones

looking forward

to a handful

of earth to eat

you carry on.

You have a future

but you missed

the boat

you coloured

outside the

lines

you declined

and now

you wade through it

the stream of things

you push

you carry on.

There is a lull

the snow

is dropping

a forgotten joy

is melting

you go with the flow

you carry on.

You brush your hair

you feed the cats

you walk the dog

you see the

world in bright

bursts of light

you get the timing right

you carry on.

Me 2006

Manic and madness

and afternoon tea.

Another murdered day

and the suspect is me!

June 6 2009

A day at the beach

kicking sand around

in my head.

edges everywhere

no baseline

boxes made of lace

enclosing the deep

dark shade of summer.

Dear Mar, Thank you for the visit at my 'first' poems on Hub Pages. This page was sleeping for awhile, and one day I noticed that it was my highest rated hub, and I woke it up, but it kept dozing off, I changed the title and added the photo (which was actually a slide). Really enjoying playing around with nifty new slide converter. Thanks for the flattery! Flattery will get you everywhere. It's a bit of a shock to see the 'young me' photo, especially when I look in the mirror. Mucho gracie.

Peg Cole from Northeast of Dallas, Texas on December 23, 2012:

Me too, S. Lane. I'm so glad I found this wonderful selection of early poems today. Plus, I found an added bonus of your close up picture. What a delight to see you for the first time. I love the thoughts you've shared from your heart on the written page for us to see the real you within. You are beautiful inside and out.

Maria Jordan from Jeffersonville PA on December 20, 2012:

While searching your profile for your latest, I wondered who this gorgeous woman was...oh, she is the writer of this exquisite poetry and my dear friend.

Wow x 2...!! Voted UP and ABI. Love, Maria

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on December 20, 2012:

You sure know how to make a person feel good mckbbks! That is special, thank you...:)

This nears perfection.

samtebbutt, Thank you for reading, and for your lovely comment.

Sam from Ireland on December 11, 2012:

Enjoyed reading your poems. They are very lyrical. I can almost hear music with them as if they are beautiful songs

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on December 10, 2012:

monolith, I am flattered, thank you. And welcome to Hub Pages. I read your first Hub earlier, beautiful poetry, inspirational message. Keep that notebook handy, it's working for you.

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on December 10, 2012:

Thank you Lori, you are very kind. I don't know if it's brave, feels like now or never. The photo is getting more attention than the writing, too funny.

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on December 10, 2012:

Ah, yes the tragic heroine of 'Love Story', same era, but I have to tell you xstatic, I don't see the resemblence...I think I just look like me :)

monolith on December 10, 2012:

You accomplish so much with very little- a skill to be envied! Quite emotional and creative. I love the simplicity.

By Lori from USA on December 10, 2012:

I think you are very talented and it is brave to just post your poems and feelings. I hope you you do a lot more ! Beautiful photo too.

Jim Higgins from Eugene, Oregon on December 09, 2012:

I looked i t up...Allie McGraw

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on December 09, 2012:

Oh? Who was that?

Jim Higgins from Eugene, Oregon on December 09, 2012:

Yeah, that's okay, there was a movie star who looked a lot like that!

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on December 09, 2012:

xstatic:I should have added more XXs but that's just depressing lol.

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on December 09, 2012:

Thank you xstatic. Been playing around with new toy (slide scanner) and came across the pic I hadn't seen for XX years, if I ever did see it. Heavy on the eyeliner in those days... :)

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on December 09, 2012:

Wow Gary, Thank you very much. I appreciate you reading, especially since poetry is not your game. This was my first published poetry Hub. It's not getting any views but for some reason is my highest rating Hub so I decided to try and make it more visible with the new (old) photo. Glad you like!

Jim Higgins from Eugene, Oregon on December 09, 2012:

Came back to read again and to say that photo is great!

Gary Holdaway from Sleaford, UK on December 09, 2012:

"Manic and madness

and afternoon tea.

Another murdered day

and the suspect is me!"

Snap. To me, this instantly highlighted the way I generate my own anti-productivity by wanting to do too much, and over thinking it while wasting my time essentially drinking tea. I don't know if that's what you meant when you had written it, but it's what it provoked in me.

Also, these poems are amazing! I very rarely partake in reading such things, and even less often enjoy them... You, however, are the exception. Beautiful photo as well!

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on August 04, 2012:

Thank you sligobay, appreciate the visit and kind words.

sligobay from east of the equator on August 04, 2012:

Your fragments are lovely snippets of emotional events and quite poetic.

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on July 30, 2012:

Thank you Integrity Yes, your comment (and vote) is much appreciated. :)

IntegrityYes on July 30, 2012:

That is so awesome. I voted up.

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on July 27, 2012:

Thank you Lucky Cats. I really appreciate your reading and leaving such a thoughtful 'critique'. It's brought me back to the very beginning of my writing adventures on Hub Pages. I have to say I am still enjoying the interaction with other writers, yourself included. Thanks again.

Kathy from The beautiful Napa Valley, California on July 27, 2012:

I am very impressed with the "Pandora's Box" entro to this collection of unique (!) poems/prose. Particularly Me 2006 "Another Murdered Day

And the suspect is me...."

stellar! completely different!

New Year's Poem 2000

Another day in the life....yes, I can relate; I think, a little melancholy..."business as usual." Day in day out...sameness and repetition...

such introspection ! Truly do like this collection, Snakeslane.

and The Townspeople - a very very interesting way in which to view passersby....as you gaze at their shod feet . And attire...again, completely unexpected and unique.

Jim Higgins from Eugene, Oregon on May 28, 2012:

Never!

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on May 28, 2012:

Oh wow! I'm ecstatic xstatic, bet you've heard that before :)

Jim Higgins from Eugene, Oregon on May 28, 2012:

Rosemary Sadler from Hawkes Bay - NewZealand on December 24, 2011:

Ah this is my youngest grandson Hunter.

it is Christmas here in 2 hours and 2 minutes. Lol So I'll probably see you in a couple of days.

Enjoy the holiday

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on December 23, 2011:

Hey Rosemay! Good to see you. Thanks for going right back. Been meaning to ask you who is that tiny baby you are holding? The 'me 2006' is a constant conflict I have with myself about wasted time. Thanks for visit, hope your Christmas is sweet and bright.

Rosemary Sadler from Hawkes Bay - NewZealand on December 23, 2011:

I love your style here snakesline. Very thought provoking poems, the one I liked the most was me 2006, I can so relate to this one.

Have yourself a wonderful Christmas, even though you are going to be busy pet sitting

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on December 13, 2011:

Thank you so much Derdriu for your visit and encouraging comments. I am interested in learning some of the more formal and traditional poetry forms, this free verse, and prose poetry is what I usually write, so not sure how I will do.

Derdriu on December 13, 2011:

Snakeslane, What a refreshing, riveting, romping poetic selection you offer! Your images are concise, the musicality precise, and the philosophy stimulating. In particular, I find the very succinct "me" poem endearing and enduring in its content and form.

Thank you for sharing, etc.,

Derdriu

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on November 30, 2011:

Thank you so much WannaB Writer, I wanna b a writer too! Really appreciate your visit and words of encouragement.

Barbara Radisavljevic from Templeton, CA on November 30, 2011:

These were very moving, and each word packed a punch. I expect to be reading more of your work. Thanks for sharing it. Sometimes it's hard to decide to take those private thoughts and put them out before the world. At least, I found it so. Voted up and more.

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on November 18, 2011:

It's about 8 pm here. Frozen ground outside and clear sky with twinkling stars. Thanks for reading my poems Vinaya, hope your day gets better.

Vinaya Ghimire from Nepal on November 18, 2011:

I also feel bad about posing for camera clicks.

"Yesterday is history, tomorrow is mystery and today is gift that's why we call it present."

Have a nice evening (Perhaps it is evening in Canada)

Its a gloomy morning in Kathmandu.

9:36 AM, Kathmandu. Listening to Last Christmas

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on November 18, 2011:

But thank you very much for that lovely compliment.

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on November 18, 2011:

Exactly

Vinaya Ghimire from Nepal on November 18, 2011:

Even if it was you, it was beyond what I call recognizable. You said "a younger smiling version" and I should have replied "you were so beautiful when young" LOL

Actually we all are.

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on November 18, 2011:

So neither is the correct picture, but I refuse to get my picture taken because they all look bad.

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on November 18, 2011:

The other avatar is me now, but I just painted it a bit and made it dark cause when I started out I didn't want to be recognized.

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on November 18, 2011:

Vinaya, slow down a moment and think about what you are saying. Now, this avatar is me, but it is an early phot from 25 years ago, so not me now.

Vinaya Ghimire from Nepal on November 18, 2011:

About this poem: You have ripped the pages of your life and showed us here on hubpages. This time beautiful things have come out of the box. I don't know what will come next. LOL!

About you: Now I can see the beauty behind the beautiful works. I always thought (about your previous avatar) you had manipulated the picture in a bad way

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on October 09, 2011:

This is really beautiful, and sooo overwhelming Aka Professor M! I'm a bit choked for words at this moment...

Aka Professor M on October 09, 2011:

Nellieanna Hay from TEXAS on October 08, 2011:

That's OK. A good sign, actually! Means you're still fully alive, aware and processing it. We're all rough around the edges at various life stages and to varying degrees, but it's recognizable as being the true gems which each of us is. The process is enhanced, even implemented, by one's own clarifying recognition of its nature in early (& at all) life stages.

:-)

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on October 08, 2011:

I don't know, I'm still feeling pretty rough around the edges :)

Nellieanna Hay from TEXAS on October 08, 2011:

You're right - it was Billy Joe who wrote and originally sang that. John Anderson & others recorded it too.

I wonder - maybe we can start with the diamond self sooner than we suspect!

Verlie Burroughs (author) from Canada on October 06, 2011:

Got it! Billy Joe Shaver.
