Working In The Rain

Updated on April 3, 2020

I Have The Time

I don't have the weather on my side

Yard work has to get done

Leaves have to be raked

If I wait for another day

Tomorrow is more rain

It will be no different than today

Then busy with work for the next four days

If I put it off till next week

The black flies season is coming

Then outside in the yard is just awful

I put on an old winter jacket and these big orange rubber gloves

Thick heavy dungarees and high top winter sneakers kept my feet protected too

Everything kept my body warm and dry

As I raked the leaves they were wet and heavy

I shoved them into plastic bags instead of the normal leaf bags

The rain would have destroyed the brown paper bags

Then I would have one mess after another to pick up

More work now to prevent more work later

I walked out in the yard at nine A.M.

I finished up at 5:30

My stomach muscles got a real work out

I feel like I lost three pounds

While I'm outside

I let my mind wander

Each time trying to speed up the process

I uncovered long vines that have rooted themselves

If I pulled on them hard enough they came up

Out you go

You have no place here

Then I began to separate the sticks from the leaves

Putting all the sticks in a burn pile

For a later date

I have also found some large branches that have fallen over the winter

I look for the prize when all this is done

A nice clean yard and a picture of beauty to enjoy all summer

I was able to separate the leaves into piles along the drive way

Then as I bagged more leaves up

I found ways to combine the piles

Giving myself an instant reward

Progress was slow all day

I ended up breaking two rakes and had to go the store to buy another one

It was my fault I pressed too hard and the leaves were way too heavy

I was going to try to fix one rake

But that would take time

Time I didn't have

I picked up more large compacter bags just incase

More paper leaf bags if the rain finally stopped

I didn't use them as the rain just came down harder

My wife checked in on me from time to time

She had no desire to come out in the rain

She doesn't have the enthusiasm or the desire

To get the job done

I drank two bottles of water and had two breakfast drinks

I thought of many other things I could be doing

Watching t.v. or on the computer

Then I reeled myself in as my legs began to buckle

There is nothing quite like smelling the beautiful fresh air

No mask needed

We are finding out on the news

The unnecessary might become necessary

When we are out in public or dealing with other people

So many things we take for granted

Now it makes us all realize how important

Just seeing our friends

Talking face to face

Walking side by side

Can be more fun than it ever was

Michael-Milec My father use to say there is no need to be afraid of hard work. Do what you have to do and don't complain. The time and effort you spent complaining you would have been done by now. I try to follow my heart and if it feels right to do it no matter what other people think. Sometimes you have to go against popular belief. In the end, I am proud of my work and it gave me plenty of time to think. Next time when I rake the leaves it will be so much easier.(lol) I always loved the rain. My wife said to get in here now you are going to get sick. As long as I stayed dry I have seen no reason to stop. She kind of understood. There are certain times she will let me be and say as long as it's not me do what you want. I appreciate all your comments and your inside true-life personal stories that connect with what I am trying to express. Thank you so much. Take care and be safe. We all want to be able to look back at this time in our lives and say we made it through and now we are better because of it.

You were born with a gift staying/working in the rain discovering it only in time of necessity. Not many people do fancied while hard working in the yard they enjoy a yer-around. Wonderful , a poet- like reasoning not to stop until it's done working in the rain. It Happened to me during my lengthy period on construction when we raised a massive primitive tent framing walls , then lifting them out under the rain. In summertime a fun getting wet and dry in a same day for a same price. Persistence is very good asset when we depend on tight schedule to move on... You proved to be inspiration once again. Thank you, and God bless and keep you healthy, happy, safe.

Gypsy Rose Lee I can think of nothing better. Feeling the refreshing wet sometimes cold rain hitting not just our face but our whole body. Covering us from head to toe. I love summer rain. Before you know it you are dry again. You cheered me right up. I think I will good for the rest of the day on that feeling alone. Thank you so much. I received this comment in good health and I hope to send one back wishing you and your family and friends nothing but the best. Have a nice and lovely Sunday.
