Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia! - A Poem

Words are fascinating, so too are the meanings attributed to them. I hope you enjoy this poem about my new discovery.

You may know the word already but it's a new word discovery day for me!

You may know the word already but it's a new word discovery day for me!

I just learned something new

As I rather love to do

There's a word I'd not heard

Didn't even know it was a word

Til a few magic minutes ago

Give this beauty a hearty hello

Deep breath, clear your diary

I hope you don't get too tired-y

Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia

Hi again, you've made to this line. Hoorah!

Can't deny it's a right royal whopper

It's a vocab keeper not a swapper

Not many words can beat it for length

To get to the end takes grit, strength

It's nowt to do with our hippo friends

Or alphabet chaos, on that depend

Sorry hippo, this isn't about you.

Sorry hippo, this isn't about you.

When we discuss meaning think irony

The English language is so contrary

Wordsmiths with laughter rocked

As to a common meaning they flocked

In their fine wisdom appeared the view

No other word could possibly do

Hippo..., that swirly wordy bird

Means to have a fear of long words

Reading or hearing long alphabet darlings

Sends some people into war, sparring

Terror. Faint, sweat and go dizzy

Too many letters, far too fizzy

So, while I'm cock-a-hoop at my find

Someone else roams in a hellish bind

Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia

Who knew? Well, now we do.
