International Women's Day-How it Started

United Nations started celebrating International Women's Day on March 8, 1975. In 2011. The former US President Barack Obama proclaimed March to be Women’s History Month.

The roots of this day can be traced back to 1908 when 15000 women marched through New York demanding voting rights, better pay, and shorter working hours. A year later the first National Woman’s day was observed in the US under a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. During World war I many women protested against the war. Women held rallies across Europe and Russia to express their solidarity with other activists to denounce the war.

To Woman Power

There is probably no area today in which women have not made their mark, be it sports, aviation, space research, defense, medicine, engineering, politics, the list is endless. But this was not achieved overnight. A lot of struggles, protests, campaigns were behind those brave women then. They had to push the rigid social barriers to create a niche for themselves and get recognized by the society for their abilities and contributions.

International Women’s day is now celebrated every year to honor their countless struggles and fights for equal rights and their achievements and successes. It is celebrated on this day to emphasize gender equality, women’s rights, work life balance, creating an inclusive environment for women and their health and wellness. Various events are held like rallies, conferences, seminars, talks and cultural events all over the world.

Let us celebrate the indomitable spirit of woman and honor all the women in our lives who don several hats and who brave several odds to achieve success with dignity and determination. This poem is dedicated to all these brave women of today:

quote

quote

Poem

She wakes up before everyone else

And hits the gym, finishes the chores

Helps the children with school work

And starts her Office work from home.

She wastes no time, gets things done

She deals with challenges

She takes no nonsense

She is the New Age Woman.

She dreams big, works hard

With sweat and dedication

She leaves no stone unturned

And achieves what she wants.

She can be fierce and independent

She values her dignity and freedom

Confident, determined and strong

She turns every adversity into achievement.

quote

quote

She can be soft, nurturing, kind and graceful

She can be emotional, she can also be tough

Listen to her, she knows what she wants

For she is born to change the world.

She is not here to compete,

She is here to enhance

Learn from her, grow with her,

celebrate her she is amazing.

quote

quote

She is not afraid to speak her mind

She holds her head high

Stand by her side and support her

That is the least you can do by her.

She is dedicated, she is motivated

She is on a quest, to be the best

She is a mother, sister, daughter and a wife

Respect her, revere her, she is a part of your life.

She teaches her girls young to stand up for themselves

To use their voices when needed to change the world

To dream big, to be dedicated, to be motivated

Because girls with dreams today will be leaders tomorrow.

She does not care what any one thinks of her,

She believes in herself; she is born smart

She does not need anyone, she’s complete by herself

Happiness is her priority and kindness her guide.

quote

quote

She does not gloat on her success

She helps other women rise

She knows true empowerment

Is by cheering each other to the skies.

Celebrate the brave new woman

She makes you so proud

Gift her with respect, and honesty,

Gift her love, gift her support

As there can no other like her.

True Manatita, ours is an evolving cosmos. The divine mother is worshipped with the same reverence as God in eastern religions. It is believed here that the supreme consciousness encompassed both the male and female manifestations. Jai Sri Krishna.

Thanks Manatita. I appreciate your visit and comments. I felt that on this day we need to reminisce on the trials and tribulations, and the struggles that the brave women put up at those times for the dignity, equality, freedom and inclusion of women the world over. Their efforts have borne fruit, and today women have excelled in all domains and proved themselves.

Thanks Ann, I appreciate your comments so much. Yes those words just came out of my heart. I have seen so many women waste good time competing when they could as well nurture a good friendship and help each other grow.

Liz Westwood from UK on March 08, 2021:

This is a well-written poem that captures the spirit of the day.

Ann Carr from SW England on March 08, 2021:

I particularly like these words:

'She is not here to compete,

She is here to enhance

Learn from her, grow with her,

celebrate her she is amazing.'

You've hit a good balance here and your words are true and inspiring. We've come a long way since the suffragettes; we owe much to them.

Great, celebratory poem, with hope and encouragement!

Ann
