When Call, Arlington

Kenneth Avery is a Southern humorist with well over a thousand fans. The charm and wit in his writing span a nearly a decade.

White rocks of stone. ..

White rocks of stone. ..

I stand, kneeling at mocking knees, morning flees . . .
Seeing the known and falling on their knees.
I gather rust, new rust, fades away the white ol stone . . .
I'm in frozen mud, I'm walking in dead knowing I'm alone.

So when call, Arlington! Tell us it's time to run away . . .
One day soon, nearing a silent moon, fading yesterday.

Step, one step two, came one, two, the trumpet's blew . . .
Guns of war, guns of wealth, tis' all the same for me.

March on, cry on, crawl in tombstone's name. .

Bullets, blood, killing's, killing's--Most of us lay maimed.
So when call, Arlington! Tell us it's time to run away . . .
One day soon, nearing a silent moon, fading yesterday.

Taps plays slow in cold, dusky evening light . . .
We tremble quiet, curse the forever's of night.

So when call, Arlington! Tell us it's time to run away . . .
One day soon, nearing a silent moon, fading yesterday.
One row, white, two rows, white, all pure white . . .
Green men with no names, walk in heralded honor.
Come one at their time . . .
One at their time.

So when call, Arlington! Tell us it's time to run away . . .
One day soon, nearing a silent moon, fading yesterday.

Never forgotten soldier . . .

Never forgotten soldier . . .
