What Is Love and What It’s Not (Poem)

Chitrangada likes to express herself by writing fiction and poetry. Her writing reflects her mood and is inspired by the beauty of nature.

Love is in the air. Pair of Pink Dahliyas.

Love is in the air. Pair of Pink Dahliyas.

What is Love, and What it’s not—a Poem to explore the true meaning of Love.

What is love, and what it’s not,

Love is a feeling, a difficult one, to explain,

Love can be felt, through eyes, through touch,

Love can be felt, through heart, through soul,

Love can be selfless, it can also be selfish,

Love is possessive, it is also sacrificial,

Love is pure, unconditional, it can also be conditional,

Love can limit you, it can be infinite too,

Love means mutual admiration, and respect,

Love can liberate you, but it also binds,

Love means desires, but it also means sacrifice,

Love can make you strong, it can also weaken you,

Love doesn’t need you to be near,

Love can be felt from a distance too,

Love doesn’t mind imperfections,

Love is itself complete, and wholesome.

Chitrangada Sharan

Love can’t be defined, It can be felt.

Love can’t be defined, It can be felt.

Thank you GlenR, for your insightful comments!

Scott C. Peck has an interesting point of view.

You are right, love should not be limited to near and dear ones. It should be spread across, to all those who really need it. Loving fellow human beings, helping them out, spreading happiness, is in fact loving The Almighty.

Thank you for your kind visit and valuable comments!

Thank you Peg Cole, for stopping by!

Yes, everyone is talking about love, since the Valentine’s Day is near. I am amazed at how the definition of love changes from person to person, from time to time. I certainly look at it differently, from the time when I was a teenager.

Thank you Louise Powles, for appreciating the poem! Yes, life is meaningless without love.

Appreciate your visit and comments!

Glen Rix from UK on February 11, 2018:

Interesting thoughts.

The most thought provoking idea I ever read about love was written by the psychologist Scott C. Peck, who said that the word and concept ‘love’ is a verb, not an adjective. I try to incorporate this idea into my responses to family and friends. To me, love is prioritising the health and happiness of these people. Love can, of course, also be universal and demonstrated by charitable works.Wishing you a Happy Vaentine’s Day.

Chitrangada Sharan (author) from New Delhi, India on February 11, 2018:

Thank you Manatita, for appreciating the theme of the poem!

I feel satisfied, when I am able to put the message across. And it means a lot, when you appreciate.

Love is an important emotion, which we must have in our lives. It is the very basis of our being. It has different forms and shades, but they are all beautiful, and bring us closer to the divine.

Many thanks for reading and appreciating!

Yes, there are so many shades in love, and it’s meaning changes from one relationship to another. But love in any form is beautiful and the very basis of our lives.

Thank You for commenting!

Thank you Harish Ji, for stopping by and appreciating the hub!

It took me some time, to decide upon the title. I am glad it worked. So many poems are written on Love, therefore I wanted this one to be different.

Thanks for your continued support! Truly appreciated!

Chitrangada Sharan (author) from New Delhi, India on February 11, 2018:

Yes, love has multiple meanings and forms. But it is the very basis of our lives. Without love, life is meaningless.

manatita44 from london on February 10, 2018:

To me, a brilliant piece! We can't all be as eloquent as Bullah Shah, but your piece is so wholesome; so inclusive ... I'm so happy that you see it in ignorance as well as being complete. In short, Love is ALL. So beautiful!!

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on February 10, 2018:

I can't define it. I just know when I feel it. I leave the definition to you. You are much better at it than I am.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on February 10, 2018:

You have captured the feeling of being in love beautifully. Love completes a person and makes us whole. It even crosses the plain of life into the afterlife. Love cannot be diminished by death. As you so nicely wrote "Love can be felt from a distance too."

Harish Mamgain from New Delhi , India on February 10, 2018:

Great analysis of love in this very beautiful poem ! We live a wonderful life if we love ; without love, we just spend our time.

I enjoyed each word , as from reading the title, I was instantly drawn to the poem, and was curious to know what you were going to say all about love.

Nice work , Chitrangada Sharan.

threekeys on February 10, 2018:

Love means different things to different people. I liked how you described love as being both expansive and constrictive. Forever a dance between opposites.

A sweet poem. Peace and Happiness to you and your loved ones.

Devika Primić from Dubrovnik, Croatia on February 10, 2018:

Wow! Everything about what love is and love is not. I feel love daily and love can ruin people too. You said a lot about love and i felt each word.
