What Could Have Been But Never Was

It All Started With My Wife Losing Her Voice

It is that time of the year

It is not uncommon to get a cough, headache or scratchy throat

Minor symptoms that can add up to a common cold

My wife was feeling great last week

This week it is a different story

She woke up and had no voice

Still feeling fine she carried on

The next day a little bit of a headache

Still no temperature and still in a positive mood

The day after a cough

That continued even at night

My wife is prone to get bronchitis

So just to be safe

We called the doctor

The earliest appointment three weeks out

So we took a trip to the urgent care

Two hour wait

I thought we might be seen ealier

We were number thirteen on a list

They asked us to wait in the car

We registered and a little over two hours later

We were seen

She had a Covid-19 test

Even with no symptoms they say you could still have it

She tested negative

Even though I would rather be so many other places

While my wife went in

I napped in the car

As I was sleeping

I heard sirens

Then they stopped

I still didn't look up

Thinking it was the police

The flashing lights still didn't bother me

When I pushed myself to open my eyes

I opened them

Blurry eyed

I seen an ambulance pull up to the emergency exit of the Urgent Care building

They brought a stretcher inside

Then still waiting I watched as they carried out

A woman that looked like my wife

They opened the back and I got out of the car

I called to her in disbelief

They put her in the ambulance

I don't think the ambulance driver heard me

I was a few feet away

He walked around to the front and they drove away

In disbelief I thought it couldn't be ?

So I went back in my car and had to think things out

My wife went in with a cough and sore throat

Recommended

Trying to make some sense of what happened

I looked at the time and waited

The place closes at eight and it is already close to seven

What if it was my wife ?

I left my phone home

Her phone was almost dead

If she couldn't talk

Nobody else would have known I was even here

So I decided to walk in

Tell them my wife was being seen

They said come to the side door

Now I was a little panicky

She said your wife is in the next room on the right

A sigh of relief

My wife hadn't been seen yet

She was still in a side room

I didn't care how long it took

When the doctor came in

After thinking the worst

What if the opposite was true ?

If she was the one going to the hospital

It turned out

Another woman that looked like my wife

Had a prednisone reaction and she was the woman who went to the hospital

My wife checked out later

With a prescription for a nasal spray and a stronger cough medicine

The doctor said It is viral

It has to run it course

It could last maybe seven to ten days

If it continues after that

Come back and we will see what's up?

Off to home

So glad to have been seen

Putting our minds at ease

It is funny how a little shock puts everything in perspective

Nothing else seemed to matter

We picked up a pizza and after writing this

I am off to bed

I have an early day of work tomorrow

I am so happy things worked out alright

Then I thought for a moment

In silence with a small prayer

What about those all those loved ones

That are waiting for

Seeing their families at their worst

Hopefully get better and on the road to recovery
