Before I Post My Poem, Let Me Just Add...

Okay, so this prompt is something to think about. I'll start by saying my age. I'm 29 years old and still haven't done half the things someone might say I "should have" by now. Where does it say we should do this or that by this or that year of our life? Is there a law? Are we going to jail if we don't meet those standards set by...who exactly? I'm dying to know! My point is that you might be young or old in body, but it's the state of your spirit that matters. It's how you feel inside that matters, not what your papers say. So do your thing, enjoy your life as much as you're able to and be thankful you've made it this far.

Immortal Spirit In A Mortal Body

Age is just a number, written in our birth certificate.
Yet we're often defined by it, like nothing else
Exists that could describe who we are as a person.

Every age of your life carries something different with it,
Be it crazy 20's or calm 70's.
None are more or less important than the other.

And frankly, who even looks their age nowadays?
You can be baby-faced or wrinkled, grey-haired or nay
No matter what your ID says.

I've seen older people with a youthful spirit
With more energy and will to enrich their life
Than some average people at 25.

The number of candles on your birthday cake
Shouldn't mean your adventures have come to an end.
It should mean you still got so much more to experience.

Our inner child is still inside our soul,
Never growing up nor wanting to.
That child is like Peter Pan,
Believing it all to be a trap.

Whether Young...

Or Old...

You deserve it all.

You deserve it all.

I love the idea that the number of candles on our birthday cake shouldn't mean that our adventures have come to an end. Thanks for sharing that idea and your poem.

Hi, yes I understand you, I also think sometimes that my birth certificate is lying! I'm glad you liked reading it!

John Hansen from Gondwana Land on July 15, 2021:

Hi Emee, I totally agree with the sentiments expressed in your article and poem. There is no written law to say how we must act or what we must do by a certain age. I don’t often act my age. I think my birth certificate is lying until I look in the mirror. This is a good response to Brenda’s prompt.

You're welcome, this prompt really inspired me since we hear or heard at some point all kinds of prejudices against people certain age and what they're able or unable to do.

Emee chan (author) on July 15, 2021:

I absolutely agree! I'm glad you enjoyed reading it!

Chitrangada Sharan from New Delhi, India on July 15, 2021:

Nice response to the word prompt, Age.

I agree with you that there can be older people with high energy and good spirits, and younger people, who lack energy and positive thoughts.

Thank you for sharing this insightful post.

A very good response to Brenda's word prompt Emee. True whether old or young we should never stop living life to the full. We should be more vital and energetic and not restricted as we age.Good work

Emee chan (author) on July 15, 2021:

Yes, our age shouldn't stop us from living and enjoying life to the fullest and learning new things.

Yup, older people do be more vital and full of life than some younger ones. They should be cherished and taken care of, but shouldn't be treated as though they can't do anything by themselves.

Thank you, I'm glad that you liked it! I enjoyed writing this one and hopefully other people will like reading it as well!

BRENDA ARLEDGE from Washington Court House on July 14, 2021:

Emee

You are so right that age has nothing to do with anything.

It isn't written down anywhere that we have to accomplish things by a certain age.

We can go by our own pace.

"Immortal Spirit In A Mortal Body" tells us that age is just a number in a birth certificate, but sometimes people use it to define our age.

NO matter what our ID says we are...we can be who we want to be.

A crazy 20 yr old or a calm 70...

(Oh no...i better learn how to get calm~I'm 60)

The number of candles on a birthday cake do not stop your adventures.

Emee...you are right.

My mother is 81 and on most days can out do me.

Loved it! I'll post a link in the word prompt article.
