Unjusted

Is there a way to say I’m sorry
To one who was hurt long ago
If I say it instead to their children
Would their hearts still hang low?

The life you were born into
Memories sealed in your heart
Created in the womb of bondage
Would it be that light was not dark

I wrote this song
But do I have the right?
Do I have the right?

Waiting for the world to finally change
Will it ever come to know your character
Born into the legacy of America’s sin
You became our shame’s sculpture

Unjusted by an unjust man
It’s too easy to do wrong
A dreamer died because we live
In fear of freedom’s song

Nobody gambling for their clothes
No sword drawing water from their side
But they suffered by the hand of piety
That’s what Jesus taught when he died

I can’t forgive the things I think
Did I come from inside a great failure?
Do my tears wipe my heart clean?
Do my eyes reflect my savior?

Unjusted by an unjust man
It’s too easy to do wrong
A dreamer died because we live
In fear of freedom’s song

I wrote this song
But do I have the right?
Do I have the right?
Do I have the right?

Thanks to you both, Gypsy and Lorna... if you can believe it, this poem landed me the pleasure of hosting a Stand Against Racism seminar at my employer's office. A series of emails back and forth from the African-American lady who was in charge of hi-lighting black history month (daily emails about the accomplishments of various black people) resulted in me sending this poem to her. I was a bit apprehensive (hence, the "Do I have the right" lines) but she was very pleased with it.

Injustice is one thing that unfortunately from time to time we have to fight against. You have a really awesome country song here.

Such a touching piece Mark and one that will resonate with all of us who fight against injustice in all its forms. I feel this is one of your best pieces - I am in awe.
