Uncertainty on Spiritual Path: A Poem

Val is a life-long practically oriented student of effective emotional and attitudinal responses to the many challenges of life.

I’ve been on a road less traveled by,

covered with roses with their thorns

it took me down and it took me high

but it taught me to grab life by horns.

On spiritual path planning is an illusion

as we’ll never know how life may unfold

looking for certainty just brings confusion

’cause while we grow truth changes its mold.

There is no signpost ahead worth reading

and it’s usually too late to take another road

no promise of comfort where spirit is leading

turning back to sameness just unbearable load.

Life is change and life is growing

anything else means slowly dying

in our boat we’re only ones rowing

laughing as we may or maybe crying.

Those who seek certainty of a rut

and a clear map of all roads ahead

might as well wake up with eyes shut

for they are breathing but spirit is dead.

Tim---You are right. On physical realm things are pretty much predictable, and we actually need it that way, otherwise life would not be worth organizing.

However, you are right again, on spiritual path (and that's what the poem is about) we have to keep an open mind, as yesterday's truth may not define the one of tomorrow, or dictate it.

Unlike knowledge, which uses past insights as stepping stones, in matters of spirituality the new may have nothing at all to do with the previous. It often happens in quantum leaps.

Nothing is certain on a spiritual journey. However, in the physical, realm death is an unquestionable certainty. (We can add here taxes, too.)

The spirit grows and changes, eventually manifesting into something we do not know because very few (if any according to some) have returned to tell us what awaits.

Wonderful poem. Great work. Insightful and skillfully written.

        Sincerely,

        Tim

Paul--Thank you for adding your insight to the theme of the poem. Yes, life only makes some sense when it's unpredictable, otherwise we live some copies of experiences in the constant fear that something might disturb familiarity of our comfort zone.

So many variables make up a lifetime confusion, uncertainty, unbearable weights all just a part of the grand scheme of life. I totally agree nothing is for sure in this ever evolving process.
