To Love in Fear

It was a beautiful night.

A perfect warmth wrapped around the atmosphere

Where whatever attire you chose to wear

Was appropriate for the weather.

The navy blue sky was clear,

The clouds wouldn’t dare to disrupt the artistry:

Stars galore,

Shining at various intensities,

And a fabulous full moon to compliment.

It was a beautiful night.

The night was old.

From the children to the elderly,

All were asleep—

Except us.

We laid on the ground,

Motionless,

Like leaves on a breezeless autumn day,

Cuddled together,

As if we were one unit,

And, in some aspects,

We were.

One soul created by two joining entities.

We were stronger.

We were happier.

We were in love.

Love is a familiar emotion to us.

We both have been madly in love before,

And our hearts have just recently healed.

Maybe that’s why I sensed a third member with us.

Gargantuan and intimidating,

Persuasive and cunning,

Suffocating and ever present,

It was…

Fear.

For though when I look into your eyes

That are more alluring than the stars above,

Or your illuminating smile

That shines brighter than the sun,

And even though a slight touch from you warms

My ice cold soul,

I can’t help but think,

I can’t help but know,

That you’re going to be the next one

To break my heart.

And when I look into your eyes,

I see the same exact crippling

Fear.
