The Shepherd's Way
Based on Psalm 23, and Jesus the Good Shepherd.
The Shepherd's Way
The valley is dark
with the shadows of
lofty mountain peaks.
Beasts lurk for prey
behind rocks and scrub,
the Shepherd's rod speaks.
Cold and fearsome
in the gaping gorge,
enshrouded in sunless gloom.
A mighty hand guides
small pilgrim's route,
through parts where dangers loom.
A faithful escort
through savage vales,
I fear no hostile vice.
Only one path leads
to the fertile fields -
from valley to the heights.
His steps are certain,
His comfort true,
to His custody, I entrust.
The pace is slow
with steady gain,
no benefit by rush.
Arrived at foothills,
faced to scale,
equipped and fortified.
The scent of grass
and freshwater call,
peace and safety there abide.
At summit's brow
lie verdant leas,
pastures rich and lush.
Refreshing waters
ponds and streams,
where currents lively gush.
Drinking deeply
and feasting fine,
from the Shepherd's table;
where enemies dare not
think to tread,
because my Lord is able.
What thrilling promise
of mercy's flow,
into eternity's span.
To dwell in His house
where His cup overflows,
forever without end.
