The Sad Face of Conflict and War

Mistakes, A Free Verse Sonnet

You drift on my memories, like turbulent deeds,

Treading on my ego with piercing heels.

I feel squashed between remorse and infamy,

Trapped by my self-confessed assurance,

Self-esteem falling off my dignity, with ten feet dives.

I sit and ponder, lamenting my past mistakes,

Insecurity and unworthiness my solemn friends.

Gone is the air of self-importance, the arrogant smirk.

Instead I pray that potential obstacles be averted;

Dishonour and disgrace, remain the strangers I once knew.

Funny thing, this comedy of errors! This teacher in retrospect!

I was so self-sufficient, so assured of my capacity;

Now I’m left to deal with the pain in my heart,

My tears spewing in prayer to the sacred moon.

*Awakening The Inner Light*

Wisdom of Sri Chinmoy

"Man invents war. Man discovers peace.
He invents war from without.
He discovers peace from within.
War man throws. Peace man sows.
The smile of war is the flood of human blood.
The smile of peace is the love, below, above." -Sri Chinmoy

Introduction to the Second Poem

I have taken a poem I wrote 4 years ago and added some more, for Memorial/Armistice Day. I was asked to write it for a Council Programme. When I read the first half 4 years ago, I was called the Bard of Solace. The Emcee said it was an excellent poem, but felt no solace in it.

Soon after, I combined lantern with carrier, as I wanted a term that fitted the messages of my poetry. I was helped by an online friend. Good, bad or dark, I feel that my work all carry Light, illumine, awaken, inspire the Heart ... hence the name Lantern Carrier. Share your thoughts about this poem freely and openly.

The Sad Face of War

Albena peeped through the cracks

Of the demolished ruins around her.

It was the fifth day and she was still alive.

Grateful for the tiny speck of light

Still peeping through the clouds,

She lifted up her Soul and offered it to God.

Blankness … then hope, as she awoke

While moving through the ether.

As if from far away,

Distant voices were issuing orders;

The familiar sound of a siren could be heard.

Slowly her fingers brushed past the oxygen

Tubing, which ran across her emaciated frame;

The lines that hurt her veins. She was in intense pain.

She had not known food or water for many days!

Cold, distraught; tearful and broken by injustice,

She began to ‘Deva Vu’ of the destructive demons,

Dropping from the sky.

“Why?” whispered the young girl questioningly.

No sound came, no answers. Only a mad rush

To get her help. Before she went under,

One simple question pierced her innocent

Heart: “Where has Love gone?”

Médecins Sans Frontiers,

Raced across the intense devastation,

To a ‘make shift’ hospital not so far away.

Everywhere was carnage …conflict.

They were used to dealing with the effects of

Battle, but angry that callous souls, dining on

Greed, caviar and opulence, had no interest

In addressing the roots of war.

Spreading their poisonous tentacles of power,

These faceless souls hid behind murky mirrors --

Dark heavy blotches, on the very hearts necessary,

To pay obeisance to the laws of mercy and compassion.

Amidst all this, Albena cried out to the Unknown,

One of many innocent children, going through extreme

Suffering, when those capable of saying something

On their behalf, remained indifferent to their concerns.

War, the outer effects of greed, fear and insecurity, that man,

From time immemorial, has been too cold or complacent to surmount.

Wisdom From Sri Chinmoy

"War forgets peace. Peace forgives war.
War is the death of the life human. Peace is the birth of the Life Divine.
Our vital passions want war.
Our psychic emotions desire peace.
War is clear futility in dire spear-stupidity.
Peace is flowing infinity in glowing eternity." -Sri Chinmoy
