The Roller Rink

Updated on January 18, 2018

We went to the roller rink
on a Tuesday evening
in late September
when the rain
was telling us to stay inside.

We went to the roller rink
because I wanted to know
what it felt like to fly
for two bucks a wing.

We went to the roller rink
where we laced up our wings
and tied ourselves together
by our fingertips
so we wouldn't lose each other
among the flashing disco lights
and giggling birthday babies.

We went to the roller rink
and I thought
this must be what Heaven is like:
Gumball colored clouds,
sticky sweet smiles,
hands crushed together as
we fly across the roller rink sky
spinning so fast
the butterflies living in my stomach
tumble into each other
like children on roller blades.

We went to the roller rink
because I wanted to
tell you that I loved you
while I spun circles around you
and Cindy Lauper sang in the background
and sugar was in the air
coated with the promise of forever.

We went to the roller rink
on a Tuesday evening
in late September
where I thought to myself:
This must be Heaven.
