The Rock Follows the Nail

Moving cloud light down a jagged rock
like a shadow wading ashore at dusk
He reached into his pocket for the chain
holding not a crucifix but instead a stone
He wasn’t giving up on God this time
he just had to learn how to move a rock

The morning broke him wide open
like an egg tossed into an iron pan
He wondered if this was a good day
for someone to save him from dying
Walking the sidewalks alone he looked
for the things that most people don’t

How strange to make it this far along
only to begin wondering why it was so
I hope you know I see you every day
but you are the one waiting for me to fly
I turned away because you're another rock
It seems the tomb I’m in is how I must live
