The Moon: Poem

Vanita Thakkar is an Entrepreneur - an Engineer-Researcher-Consultant and an Artist - Singer-Composer-Poetess-Writer from Vadodara, Gujarat.

I wrote this poem when I was in the Higher Secondary School - in the final stages of my schooling - as a 12th standard student ....

During the two years of my Higher Secondary, I had written many poems - in Hindi as well as English - they were as if cropping up - perhaps to ease my mind off the burdens of study .... During 12th standard, I had put restrictions on myself - very restricted, and for long phases, no listening to music; no TV programmes; no movies .... remaining away from Music is too tough a task for me - I realized this very clearly during those days ....

The Moon

Look ! Look at the distant moon !

Scattering silvery light all around,

Peeping from the tiny window of Heaven,

Gleaming in the darkness enveloping the ground !

All the light it throws and

The delight it showers are but, apparent,

But for its reflective surface,

It would be a dark, invisible fragment.

Darkness is all it has,

But, it makes itself smile and glow

By reflecting in the eternal gloom,

The rays it receives from the Apollo.

We can also be like the Moon

When the darkness of sorrow surrounds us.

While searching our own delight, we can smile and shine

By reflecting the radiance of joy spread by others.

Thanks a lot, Peggy for your kind words - heartily appreciate them.

I thoroughly enjoyed schooling, a topper in studies and in the forefront in culture activities, hence a pet to most of my teachers .... I am still in touch with a couple of them.

Have multiple and diverse higher qualifications and field experiences .... learning always helps.

I enjoyed the message of this poem. Despite our circumstances, we can still shine a light from within by sharing and reflecting the good company of others. You were very disciplined as a student. I am sure it paid big benefits in the end.

Thanks a lot, Chitrangada for your nice comment and blessings.

I wrote my first poem when I was nine.

There are some great memories of writing at school - sometimes during SUPW periods - they were for craft / DIY activities and we used to call the Some Useful Periods Wasted .... we would select a topic - Hindi or English, be seated on back benches by the window and write poems .... some of those poems are published in my anthologies of poems .... Some unpublished ones are still there in my old diaries ....

Your support is very special and invaluable to me - you are among my very first friends on HubPages.

Lots of love and regards,

Beautifully expressed poem.

The last four lines give an important message. We should be positive, even during difficult times.

Well composed, at such a young age. Keep shining Vanita.

Thanks for sharing.
