Vanita is an engineer-researcher-consultant-artist: a gifted singer-poetess; & writes in English-Hindi-Gujarati on her diverse experiences
I wrote this poem when I was in the Higher Secondary School - in the final stages of my schooling - as a 12th standard student ....
During the two years of my Higher Secondary, I had written many poems - in Hindi as well as English - they were as if cropping up - perhaps to ease my mind off the burdens of study .... During 12th standard, I had put restrictions on myself - very restricted, and for long phases, no listening to music; no TV programmes; no movies .... remaining away from Music is too tough a task for me - I realized this very clearly during those days ....
Look ! Look at the distant moon !
Scattering silvery light all around,
Peeping from the tiny window of Heaven,
Gleaming in the darkness enveloping the ground !
All the light it throws and
The delight it showers are but, apparent,
But for its reflective surface,
It would be a dark, invisible fragment.
Darkness is all it has,
But, it makes itself smile and glow
By reflecting in the eternal gloom,
The rays it receives from the Apollo.
We can also be like the Moon
When the darkness of sorrow surrounds us.
While searching our own delight, we can smile and shine
By reflecting the radiance of joy spread by others.
