The Knock

I heard a knock on my door, unsure of itself
A young face, distressed but ready for passion
The sun may have come up or was it asleep
Her life wasn’t what she’d could ever imagine

I felt her urgency, her mind ready to change
She took my hand putting her finger to her lips
It was a tempest but not my first or last
Then her eye calmed two sailing ships

She sat up like a cat leaving the room
She said, I need to leave before we go too far
I asked where are you going in such a hurry
I have to go think about how things are

I wondered what’s there to think about?
She said, why am I falling in love so quickly
I said, you must have been feeling lonely
Yes, I’m lonely without someone with me

We don’t have to decide
No we don't have to decide
Don’t run to me, don’t run away
Let’s be friends for a moment
That’s all we have to be
Yes that's all we have to be

I said, don’t go and grabbed some beers
She walked into the other room slowly
She kept saying I really should just go
I said, it’s ok, but don’t go so quickly

So you’re lonely, I know how it feels
Yes, that’s why I knocked, it’s really true
Has it been too long for you, does it hurt
Yes, much too long, now I’m running to you

She said, that’s just it, I don’t want to run
But it hurts me so much, I feel so dark
Do you feel lonely now talking to me?
No, I don’t, it feels like a day in the park

You’re feeling normal again, let’s just laugh
Let’s just be normal, let’s just talk as friends
You don’t have to decide about tomorrow
It doesn’t have to begin, it doesn’t have to end

We don’t have to decide
No we don't have to decide
Don’t run to me, don’t run away
Let’s be friends for a moment
That’s all we have to be
Yes that's all we have to be

I don’t know if I'm the answer to a prayer
Am I the sun drawing someone to the west
Am I just the next mistake in her sad life
How can a sinner ask God who knows best?

Hey! Glad to see you here too! I was posting my stuff on another site for years (besides Facebook) but they started having technical difficulties so here I am again. I'm not really sure why I left to be perfectly honest. They've been moving my stuff over to their Letterpile which looks like some sort of other site for featured work. It's kind of a fictional thing (the girl getting up the nerve to knock on the door of her neighbor that she's seen for a long time and decided to make the move) but with what I imagine could be the actual conversation.

Thanks for reading it. It's a long one.

Hi Mark! Nice to see you back at the hub. I have been going through all mine and had to resubmit them to get published. I really like this. but I like all your poems. lol This kinda speaks to me because I feel like I am in a similar situation with someone. I really like the last stanza.
