The Essence of Dusk

Lorna is a published writer with a particular interest in narrative poetry, which she finds therapeutic.

the-essence-of-dawn

That special quality that obscures reality

When the semi-darkened world

Holds on to its last glimmer of light

Shrouding the trees in a veil of darkness

Where their shadows pay homage

To the timeless beauty of dusk

The moon weaving its tendrils of mist

As it captures the stars in a whispered goodbye

Creatures of the night stir amongst decaying leaves

Creating an underworld of invisible movements

Within a labyrinth known only to the few

Intent on escaping the inevitability of dusk

Hurried footsteps echo in the stillness

As the lonely path stretches out of sight

Clinging to the last vestiges of familiarity

That moment when darkness meets light

Alone at the edges of reality

I turn the key – I am home

This beautiful poem reminds me of my Dad. Often I think of him at dusk as he loved to sail in the twilight. I feel in the imagery of your words I could feel his smile one more time. Blessing to you, and thank you for this moment.

Your poem reminded me of my late maternal grandfather. He asked me all the time to accompany him to the beach shore during dusk and dawn time to see the sunrise and sunset. These happened on his dying days from old age. I came to visit and to take care of him during his sick days. More so, your poem made me reflect on life in general. Thank you for this wonderful poem.

Dusk is beautifully captured in your eloquent poem, Lorna, about this time of the day between lightness and darkness. I love this twilight time when light retreats and shadows start to emerge. Your poem paints a picture of this time in contrasting tones.I really enjoyed this reading experience.
