The Crime of Passivity

To play it safe
In a drowning world
Screaming for
Your next move
For you to
Live and thrive
Yet you
Stand still
Seemingly undisturbed
Unflinchingly waiting
For another sign
Is absurd.

To keep wearing your
Good-vibes' earphones on
Deaf to the wailing
Of everybody who
Asks for your
Helping hand
Is not an act
Of peace-keeping
But rather
Being an Accomplice
Of a Culprit's
Heinous Crimes.

To be silent
When you have
So much truth
To share
Through your
Own voice
Is to perpetuate
That kills
The powerless.

To be a friend
Of everybody
With blind loyalty
Of entirely everything
Spread so thinly
Not wanting to
Rock the boat
Not knowing
Where you are
Yet expectant of others'
Or social esteem
As compensations
Is not friendship
But a camouflage
Work of espionage.

Yes, Lorna. Until we have a collective awareness of how each one of us has a role to play in every negative incident which we often call a misfortune, bad things keep happening over and over again - unless, we recognize them (not trivialize them), own up to them and do something about it.

Lorna Lamon on September 17, 2019:

Sadly passivity is all to prevalent in many societies today, perhaps out of fear of consequences. Your words are meaningful and true and I enjoyed reading this thought provoking poem.
