The Cell Phone Craze: A Satiric Poem

Val is a life-long practically oriented student of effective emotional and attitudinal responses to the many challenges of life.

Invention of a cell phone beats one of a car

for we would switch back to horse and cart

agree to go on foot doesn't matter how far

but from our cell phone we would not part.

It doesn't take a shrink to call it surrogate friend

or maybe a parent, a teacher, or whoever

and it has become such a crazy trend

not making us look very clever.

Those incessant monologs sounding a big deal

on sidewalks, in stores, restrooms, and bars

and selfies taken with a narcissistic zeal

not to mention that texting in the cars.

My special treat is watching those cyber fights

as idiots get oblivious of all people around

one of those truly irreplaceable sights

to watch and hear how they sound.

And yet, not so many things I'd mock rather

then two people sitting at the same table

and having chat by texting each other

that's what I call socially disabled.

Protests about privacy are my laughing stock

as you don't need to tap anybody's phone

just follow the cell-freak around the block

and you will know all that is going on.

Linda---Thank you. I get into this satiric mood every time when I think how people tend to exaggerate just about everything in life, whether useful or harmful.

Very nice presentation of that viral craze afflicting people of all ages and classes. People like you and me can worry at them with concern for their lives. But they can't live without that silly craze for it.

I love your satire. It's sad that many of the points that you've raised about cell phone use actually apply to society today. Cell phones can certainly be useful, but they can create problems as well.
