poem-324

If I die tell my mama I'm sorry

Tell her I died fighting

Please let her know I didn't give up

Let her know my spirit was strong

I never lost; I decided to rest.

If I die tell my mama I'm sorry

Let her know that am ashamed

Because I let her down at the wrong time

Tell her never to forgive me

For not saying goodbye to her.

If I die tell my mama I'm sorry

My introvert self wouldn't let me

Tell her all that I was going through

I didn't want to be a pain in her neck

That's why I sat, waiting to succumb.

If I die tell my mama I'm sorry

Don't tell her how much you knew me

Sit with her by my graveside

But never tell her to take heart

Let her cry, coz I let her down.

If I die tell my mama I'm sorry

Tell her not to weep too much

Because her tomorrow is brighter

Tell her to donate my belongings

Because that's what I lived for.

If I die tell my mama I'm sorry

Tell her to keep them all; memories

Bury me in a blue casket

Because that's what my spirit will love

Stay by her side, comfort her for me.

Questions & Answers

Question: This poem is full of sorrow. Why do you talk of death throughout this poem?

Answer: I was trying to imagine dying suddenly and the things I should have done before I died, words I should have said, preparations I should have made.
