like cotton candy on a summer afternoon

like dainty dragon-shaped clouds

like syrupy giggles at the end of dad’s jokes

like sugar-coated dreams that tickle the roof of your mouth

like the rum-scented romance novel she used to read in secret

like her mom’s honeyed apple pie

like that first marzipan kiss under a weeping willow

like a small luscious drop of wine on her nightgown

like a ring tucked away in her old coat pocket

like her cheeks suddenly turning strawberry-red

like her heart beating faster and faster

like the room getting smaller
