Villanelle

I like to challenge myself and try writing poems in different styles.

I have written this poem in the style of a Villanelle. One of the strongest repeating refrain forms in classical poetry.

I will not go into a nuts and bolts explanation of what a Villanelle is and how to write one, but hope you like my attempt. I welcome any critique from anyone who is better versed in this form of poetry.

You don’t have to always live this lie.

Try to find another way instead.

Spread your wings and teach yourself to fly.

All your thoughts and fears you multiply,

Listening to those voices in your head.

You don’t have to always life this lie.

Find a way to help you falsify.

the thoughts, that fill you up with dread.

Spread your wings and learn how to fly.

You don’t want your life to just pass by.

Filled with fear at every step you tread.

You don’t have to always live this lie.

There’s nothing that you need to justify.

Look forward, and see what’s up ahead.

Spread your wings and learn how to fly.

To your fears, you can now say goodbye.

The sun is now shining overhead.

You don’t have to always life this lie.

Spread your wings and learn how to fly.

Glad you liked in Lorna. Yes poetry is a very good platform for being able to express yourself. The different styles can help to add strength to your message, just as much as the words you use.

Lorna Lamon on October 10, 2019:

Even though I am not an expert on this form of poetry I thought the rhyming verses were excellent. It's always good to experiment and I think poetry allows us to do this.

Charlie Halliday (author) from Scotland on October 10, 2019:

Thanks John. I enjoy playing with the different forms of poetry. It helps me keep this old brain of mine ticking over. Some have been a disaster, but I still enjoyed the attempt.

John Hansen from Queensland Australia on October 09, 2019:

I like you Villanelle, Charlie. I'm no expert though, I don't think I have ever written one. It is always good for a poet to experiment with new forms though. At the moment I am wrestling with a sonnet and it is quite a struggle.
