Spirit of Your Diary

Lorna is a published writer with a particular interest in narrative poetry, which she finds therapeutic.

spirit-of-your-diary

I touch the faded binding of your diary

Nestling comfortably within the clothing

Where the faintest hint of lavender escapes

Assailing my senses with memories of you

As I turn the key the veil softly falls away

Unlocking this keeper of unrevealed words

Written in a paradox of eternal excitement

Capturing thoughts held in timeless moments

Like a fictional alter ego without boundaries

Escaping detection of a life lacking colour

Feeding your soul within this hallowed space

Where lasting memories are preserved in ink

A dancing shadow within your lines

Revelling in those moments of lightness

So tranquil and serene yet still retaining

The aloofness of a precious work of art

Rewinding the pages of your life’s journey

I cross the rivers of your deepest thoughts

Created in the reflections of your daily life

Silently penned as an alternative to them

Memories have their own written seasons

I travel each one in search of your being

Haunted by the whispers of conversations

Slipping like grains of sand through my fingers

Hi Lorna, you poems always leave me very touched and kindle something inside. I am an on-off diary witer and could relate so well to this journey through a diary.I cross the river of your deepest thoughts ..created in the reflections of your daily life....something simple can sometimes hold something so profound. Your wordplay and imagery is to die for. Love...

Lorna Lamon (author) on June 21, 2020:

Thank you Anupam you are so kind. How wonderful that you speak three languages and you also dream In Hindi. I think you express yourself very well in English and your poems come from the heart. "Our thoughts too have seasons" is the perfect title - very similar to my own - two poetic minds think alike. Take care and keep writing my dear friend.

Anupam Mitu from MUMBAI on June 21, 2020:

"Memories have their own written seasons" I love you Lorena, as your words feel very close to me

Do you know Kamala Das of India? She has been an excellent writer. A sort of inspiration to me. She said in one of her poems "I am Indian, very brown, born in Malabar, I speak three languages, write in two, dream in one."

Like her I too speak three languages (Maithili: My mother language; Hindi: My teacher; English: My livelihood, my employer), write in two (English & Hindi) & Dream in one (Hindi)

Why I told so much here, as the way I am able to express myself in Hindi, I am not able to do that so effectively in English. But what you have said, I too have written something similar in hindi a few years ago with the title ( Our thoughts too have seasons)

विचारों का भी मौसम होता है!

Such a lovely thought Rhodora - emotions that flow from the heart to the pen, becoming cherished words. A diary is a great place to express these emotions. Thank you for the lovely comment - appreciated as always. Take care.

Rhodora from Dubai UAE on June 16, 2020:

The first book that I created is my diary

The first thing that developed my writing gift is my diary....

That let's my emotion flows freely from my heart to my pen to words to a paper

I love this♥️♥️♥️

True enough, our diaries / journals know us better than anyone and anything else. They're not just papers, but our memories and thoughts are inked in those lines. Thank you for this!

Lorna Lamon (author) on June 04, 2020:

I agree Denise we leave a little piece of ourselves in our words, photos or artwork. I like that idea. Thank you for your lovely comments which I always appreciate.

Denise McGill from Fresno CA on June 04, 2020:

We make ourselves immortal by leaving words and photos behind, don't you think? Great imagery.

I am moved by your writings and how you can see behind the curtain. I use to write in a dairy and like many things we do in life I stopped. Later the years roll forward and I wish I had continued on. You sparked a new interest in an old good habit. Thank you for sharing and caring with words and your many thoughts. Have a beautiful night.

I used to keep a diary, however, I now keep a journal of thoughts and ideas. I love the idea of looking into the past and seeing the person you once were. Glad you enjoyed the poem and thank you for the lovely comments Peggy.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on June 01, 2020:

Your poem is a beautiful portrayal of looking through a diary and unearthing thoughts and feelings of times past. My paternal grandmother kept a daily journal for many years. My maternal grandmother, to my knowledge, only kept a diary when my grandparents were traveling.

Always good to see you John and even though I haven't kept a diary for years, I advise the use of keeping a journal in my therapy practice. I believe we leave a little piece of ourselves in our poetry and I can't think of a better legacy. Thank you for your lovely comments which I always appreciate.

Miebakagh Fiberesima from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NIGERIA. on May 20, 2020:

Good morning Lorna. Although your poems are simple and short, I am trying to analysis the style with this poem. It made me open up an old diary when I was a boy of 25 and lo, a lesson to summarized a poem from the diary. I agreed with you that all you wrote is true. Thanks for sharing.

Rosina S Khan on May 20, 2020:

You are right, Lorna, it is in reading the words in someone's diary that you can best understand the person. Beautiful poem. The fifth verse is my fave. I really enjoyed this poem. Thanks for sharing.

John Hansen from Queensland Australia on May 20, 2020:

Beautifully woven words, so sensitively portrayed, that make us feel we are the person reading the diary, Lorna. This is a touching poem. I started writing a diary or journal a few times but gave up...I hope my poetry and other writing captures my life in someway to leave a legacy when I’m gone however. Good job.

Lorna Lamon (author) on May 20, 2020:

I have found this to be the case Lora as people only reveal who they really are in the words they write. I am glad I was able to bring these feelings and thoughts to life and you enjoyed this poem. Your comments are always so thoughtful and generous.

Verlie Burroughs from Canada on May 20, 2020:

Lorna, you have such a lovely light touch, appreciate your gentle sensitivitity, wonderful imagery.

Lora Hollings on May 20, 2020:

What a beautiful poem, Lorna! You have taken us on a journey through your captivating verse of someone’s most intimate thoughts as they lived their lives imbued with feelings as they experienced these moments. I love the concept of your poem too. Our perception of a person may be inaccurate and we don’t really get to know them until we can read their thoughts about their lives. Writing can truly reveal a person’s inner most being. You certainly have captured this eloquently in your awesome poem!
