Soul vs. Beast in Us: A Poem
Thirst for money, status, power and greed
are remnants of animal still living in us
and the stronger we feel that need
the less spiritual is our inner call.
Torn between beast and holy kind
often so reluctant our foot may seem
pursuing possessions or peace of mind
and what should we allow to be our dream.
Power and money one breeding the other
advertising that ugly sign of "never enough"
ruthless in mission to intimidate and smother
with every personal virtue that becomes a bluff.
So we end up poor in our ivory tower
strangers to ourselves, to those we love
our life collapsing under weight of that power
now looking for something more noble and above.
As sooner or later must come that time
for soul to rebel and crush that phony joy
while making life feel like an intimate crime
resolutely devaluating that every expensive toy.
